DEFINITION OF BIOGRAPHY
A biography is a story or information about a person's life. A biography is more
complex than just a curriculum vitae and work data of a person, it also tells about the
feelings involved in experiencing these events. In this biography, the life of a character
from childhood to old, even death is fully explained. All services, works, and everything
produced or done by a character is also made clear. Biographical texts are composed
by other people, not by yourself.
Biography consists of two words, namely:
• Bios which means life
• Graphia which means writing
Biography text is a detailed description or account of a person’s life and written by
someone else, it is nonfiction text.

Function of Biography

 To know a person’s story about his/her life outside of any accomplishments this
person may be known for.
 To give much information easily and educate the readers

Characteristics of Biography

• Biography is not written by subject and always written in the third person.

Biographical texts are not made by the person whose biography is being told, but are
told by another person in a third person perspective.

• Based on research.

The text is made based on the facts of a character's life experience containing the story
or story of a character in navigating his life, whether it is in the form of strengths,
problems or weaknesses written by others so that they deserve to be role models.

Generic Structure
1. Orientation (Introduction)

It is the opening paragraph, gives the readers the background information of the person.

Usually contains biodata narrated such as full name, place and date of birth. Some
general information can also be presented in this section as an introduction to the
characters.

2. Events

In events, should be in chronological order.

This stage is part of the events or events experienced by the character. Contains an
explanation of a story either in the form of problem solving, career processes, and
various events that have been experienced by a character that led to success.

3. Re-Orientation (Closing)

It consists of a conclusion or comment or the writer. Tell about the achievement or the
contribution of the person.

In the closing, this section contains the writer's view of the character being narrated.
This revision is optional, which means that the author can give his personal view of the
character being told or the author does not give his personal view of the character being
narrated is not an important matter.

Grammar and Language Features


Simple Past Tense
Simple Past Tense is the main menu in making Biographical Text. A simple form of
events that occurred in the past. Using the second form of the verb (verb 2).

Example:

 Harry Edward Styles was born in Redditch, Worcestershire on 1 February 1994.


 He is the son of Anne Cox (née Selley) and Desmond “Des” Styles, who worked
in finance.
 Many of his ancestors were farm laborers in Norfolk.
Temporal Sequence and Temporal Conjunction.
As a liaison between one sentence and another in the order of time.

Example :

 Styles’ parents divorced when he was seven and his mother later was remarried
to Robin Twist; he died in 2017.

Focus on Specific participants


Use of Action verbs.

Describe something that the character is actively doing by using several verbs in the V2
or Past Form.

Example :

 Styles launched his own record label, Erskine Records, in May and he  signed a


recording contract with Columbia Records as a solo artist, the same label behind
One Direction, in June.
 Styles wrote the song “Someday” in collaboration with Meghan Trainor for
Michael Bublé’s album Nobody but Me,  released in October.

Ki Hajar Dewantara

On May 2, 1889 Ki Hajar Dewantara born in Yogyakarta. The original name of Ki Hajar
Dewantara i.e. Raden Mas Soewardi Soeryaningrat. He comes from a family of Yogyakarta
Kingdom. Raden Mas Soewardi Soeryaningrat, he was renamed Ki Hajar Dewantara when
even 40 year old Caka year count did. Since that time, he was no longer using knighted before
his name. It is intended that he be free to close to the people, both physically and in his heart.
He is a figure of a polite, simple and noble-hearted. Although the gentility but Ki Hajar
Dewantara still hang out with the people downstairs and diligently provide succor to the needy.

The journey of life Ki Hajar Dewantara really characterized the struggle and devotion in the
interest of his people. He completed elementary school in ELS (Netherlandselementary school)
then extends to the STOVIA (school Doctor Bumiputra), but not until the end due to illness. He
then worked as a journalist on several newspapers, among others, Sedyotomo, Java, Midden
De Express, Indian Oetoesan, Kaoem, Moeda Tjahaja Timoer and Poesara. In his time, he
belongs to the author reliable. His writings are very communicative, sharp and so capable of
uplifting patriotic antikolonialfor readers.

Ki Hajar Dewantara in addition to young journalists as a tenacious, he was also active in social
and political organization. In 1908, he was active in Boedi Oetomo propaganda section to
socialize and evocative awareness of Indonesia at that time aboutthe importance of unity and
unity in the nation and State.

Ki Hajar Dewantara very active and concerned with the world of education. One of the proofs of
it i.e. He established the School Grounds Students in 1922.

He gave the example of and motivation to young people to keep passion in learning about
science. One of the motivational words of Ki Hajar Dewantara which until now still inherent in
the minds of all of us, namely: “Tut wuri handayani” ing ngarsa sung tulada, ing madya mangun
karsa, tut wuri handayani.
