Getting to know PHOTOSYNTHESIS is understanding
how life exists on earth! Do you want to know more about
it? I am sure you can hug a tree, smile or even talk to plants
once you realize the process and perform the activities
prepared for you in this module.
At the end of this module, you should be able to:
All cells need energy to live. All organisms are either heterotrophs or
autotrophs. Hetero means others troph means food. Heterotrophs must
consume food for energy. Auto means self troph means food. Autotrophs can
make their own food.
The process of food making is called PHOTOSYNTHESIS.
A. ENGAGE
So quick!
Please check your answers at the answer key
section and see how you scored. Keep going!
More fun activities ahead!
DEPICTION
Directions: Below are the reactants and products of photosynthesis. Choose the
chemical symbol that matches the word.
+=
- H2O CO2 O2 C6H12O6
C. EXPLAIN
Great! Now, take time to process the information
you acquired by accomplishing the next task. It
seems that you are now ready to park your
ideas! Are you ready?
UNRESTRICTED
Direction: Answer the guide questions to write a sentence summary for
photosynthesis.
1. How do plants make food?
CLUE: 2 raw materials
a. taken in from the roots and surroundings
b. taken in from the air of water
Direction: The table contains words you encountered in the activity. Fill up the table by writing
the corresponding letter symbols and your idea about the given words.
Water
Carbon dioxide
oxygen
glucose

Guide questions:
1. Are you familiar with those words? Why do you think you are familiar with
them?

The words you have described in the activity are called REACTANTS and
PRODUCTS for PHOTOSYNTHESIS. The first lesson will teach you the concept of
photosynthesis both words and in equation.
D. ELABORATE
Plants, algae and cyanobacteria are the only organisms capable of performing
photosynthesis. They use light to make their own food, they are called
PHOTOAUTOTROPHS (self-feeders using light). Other organisms, such as
animals, fungi, and other bacteria are called HETEROTROPHS (other feeders).
They get their food produced by autotrophs for their energy needs. Another group of
bacteria called CHEMOAUTOTROPHS (chemo-feeders), use sugar not light energy
in extracting energy from inorganic compounds
WORDS:
Chlorophyll
SYMBOLS:
The energy from the sun drives the reaction of carbon dioxide and water
molecules to produce sugar and oxygen, as seen in the chemical equation for
photosynthesis. Though the equation looks simple, it is carried out through many
complex steps. Before learning the details of how photoautotrophs convert light
energy into chemical energy, it is important to become familiar with the structures
involved.

HINT: Why do plants perform photosynthesis? What type of energy goes into
a plant during photosynthesis? What do plants need? What do plants need?
What do plants produced?
Plants perform photosynthesis for other organisms to obtain energy from
food. Leaves have chlorophyll to capture sunlight. Plants need water and
carbon dioxide to produce sugar and oxygen.
