Adrenergic receptors are receptors found on the surface of cells that are activated when
they bind a catecholamine neurotransmitter. Norepinephrine and epinephrine are two
catecholamines. They play a role in the sympathetic nervous system's stimulation of our
organs, as well as helping to trigger the fight or flight response. The sympathetic
postganglionic neurons of the autonomic nervous system and the chromaffin cells of the
adrenal medulla releases catecholamines, they bind the adrenergic receptors on the target
organ and cause a variety of effects such as increased heart rate and bronchodilation.
Adrenoceptors are also involved in functions such as memory and alertness in the central
nervous system. The three families of adrenoceptors α1, α2, and β initiates a cascade of
molecular events which include receptor coupling with a heterotrimeric guanine nucleotide
regulatory protein (G-protein) and subsequent interaction with various effector molecules.
There are numerous drugs that bind to adrenoceptors that have beneficial therapeutic
effects. Oxymetazoline is an example of adrenergic drugs, this drug only binds to α1
receptors; is a decongestant that causes blood vessels in the nasal passages to constrict. The
purpose of oxymetazoline nasal is to provide temporary relief from nasal congestion caused
by allergies or the common cold.
