Abstract:

Protest Against the Dystopian Civilization: A Study of Scott Westerfeld’s

Novel Uglies

Uglies is a science fiction novel written by Scott Westerfeld in 2005. The novel is set in a

dystopian world where in which every young woman is considered ugly but they are turned into

beautiful by a cosmetic surgery operation after the young women grown up 16 years old. The

novel portrays the life of a teenage girl named Tally Youngblood. And it discusses how Tally,

the young adult rebels against the worlds enforced conformity, after she is told by her best

friends Shay and David her the disadvantages to becoming pretty such as any health issues after

someone undergoes a cosmetic surgery.

The present paper attempts to bring out the relation between the development of female

prejudice and a woman’s revolt against the oppressive, dystopian world in the age of technology

as it is showed in the present century young adult novel. Moreover, the paper examines the

societal, emotional and moral growth of the lady protagonist in the natural life cycle with the

looming role as a powerful dissident of the changes of the world. The paper argues that the

teenage girls are as independent as any other social creature in the nature with free will and at the

same time suffering outdoor force.
