THE CELL THEORY

Overview
The Cell Theory refers to set of ideas, now
universally accepted, that all living things are made
up of cells. A cell is the fundamental unit of all living
organisms and is also the unit for reproduction. Our
understanding of cells has gone through many
changes, and this understanding is mediated
primarily by the technology available to scientists.

What is a THEORY?
• A set of principles developed over time
via multiple investigations.
• The discovery of the cell was made
through the invention of the microscope
between 1665-1838.
Contributors
There are 5 contributors to the cell theory:
1. Robert Hooke
2. Anton Van Leewenhoek

5.
Robert Hooke
(English Scientist)
• Used the compound microscope to
observe cork.
• Observed that cork is composed of
small, hollow compartments.
• Coined the word “cellula”
• The parts prompted Hooke to think
of small rooms in a monastery, so he
gave them the same name: CELLS.

Keynote! -> Hooke discovered the cell in 1665,which

started formulating the cell theory.

Observation
Antonie van Leeuwenhoek
(Dutch Tradesman)

• From investigating and

experimenting with his
microscope, Leeuwenhoek
became one of the first
scientists to refer to living
cells when he observed an
abundant number of single-
celled organisms, which he
called animalcules,
swimming in a drop of
pond water!

Microscope
Matthias Schleiden (1804-1881)
German Botanist

• Professor of Botany at the

University of Jena
• used the compound microscope
and studied plant cells
• Plants are made up of cells
• Discussed what he observed
with his dear friend, German
scientist Theodor Schwann.
Theodor Schwann (1810-1882)
German Botanist
• Animal tissues
• Animals are made up of cells
• Schwann published the 1st
statement of the cell theory: all
living things are made of cells
POSTULATES OF CELL
THEORY
1. All organisms are made up of cell

2. Cell is the basic unit of life

3.
Rudolf Virchow
(1821-1902)

• The last postulate was

eventually proven, upon
studying how cells played role
in body diseases.
• Omnis cellula e cellula
• Cells arise from pre-existing cells
