The Cell Theory
The Cell Theory
Overview
The Cell Theory refers to set of ideas, now
universally accepted, that all living things are made
up of cells. A cell is the fundamental unit of all living
organisms and is also the unit for reproduction. Our
understanding of cells has gone through many
changes, and this understanding is mediated
primarily by the technology available to scientists.

Robert Hooke
(English Scientist)
• Used the compound microscope to
observe cork.
• Observed that cork is composed of
small, hollow compartments.
• Coined the word “cellula”
• The parts prompted Hooke to think
of small rooms in a monastery, so he
gave them the same name: CELLS.
