NEED TO KNOW
a. Introduction
This First Quarter Module, “The Church, Beginnings, and Growth” – focuses on the significant role
of God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit – the Holy Trinity, in the establishment and growth of
the Church. The first lesson talks about the Church as the work of the Trinity. In Lesson 2, the Church
is presented as being founded by Christ as He preached during His public life. In Lesson 3, the Church
that was born from the heart of God the Father and established by Jesus continues to be present today
through the power of the Holy Spirit. Lesson 4 zooms in on the Church as it is animated, inspired, and
enabled by the abiding presence of the Holy Spirit, in its mission to spread the Good News of Jesus
Christ. Finally, Lesson 5 discusses renewal as a gift of newness and fullness of life offered to our
Church and our people by the God of love.
The lessons in this module will enable you to be aware of the essential role of the Trinity in the
birth and growth of the Church and will help you learn to value the gift of the Triune God – the Church –
as you follow the example of unity shown by God the Father, God the Son, and the Holy Spirit. At the
same time, you will get to fulfill the command of Jesus to “go and make disciples of all nations” by your
words and the way of life you live, to be strong in faith and to open your hearts always to the bidding of
the Holy Spirit, ready to die to your old self, and daring to risk new and unfamiliar paths and patterns.
As you go through this module, keep in mind and put into heart these questions:

D: Analyze the Holy Trinity as the source and origin of the Church
M: Make a self-evaluation of how we can faithfully perform our mission of leading others to Him
I. NEED TO CONNECT
Have you ever felt in any way that you are neglected? Ignored?
According to a 2005 survey, the report estimates that there are approximately 1.5 million children
on the streets working as beggars, pickpockets, drug abusers and child prostitutes (ECPAT).
Today, the number of children and youth living part of their lives on the streets in the Philippines
could reach two million out of a total population of 84 million.
This is the result of human neglect, spiritual paralysis, greed and political irresponsibility that
allows and exacerbates the entrenchment of poverty in an unjust social system. We all belong to a
community like our family, school and community. Some of us belong to other kinds of
communities which help and strive to serve others. As they say, no one is an island.
Read the story “Tulay ng Kabataan”. Refer to pages 2- 3 of your Religion book

We belong to different communities, one which is the Church. The Church is a community

community where each one is given the capacity to care for one another. The Church as
community is patterned after the Trinity
