MATHEMATICS

Time Allowed: Three Hours


(An extra ten minutes is allowed for reading this paper.)

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Write all your answers in the Answer Book provided.

2. Write your Index Number on the front page and inside the back flap of the Answer Book.

3. If you need more paper, ask the supervisor for extra sheets. Tie these sheets inside the Answer
Book at the appropriate places.

4. You may use a calculator, provided it is silent, battery-operated and non-programmable.

5. Unless otherwise stated, all rounding off should be corrected to two decimal places.
Rounding off decimal answers should be done only at the final step.

6. There are two sections in this paper. Both sections are compulsory.

7. You are required to start each question in Section B of the Answer Book on a new page.

Note: The required tables and formulae you will need during the examination are given on
pages 19 to 24.

Show all your working clearly. Marks will be awarded for appropriate methods and
partially correct answers.

21. If x = log 2 and y = log 3 , write an expression for log 36 in terms of x and y. (2 marks)

22. In a Mathematics competition each correct answer gains 5 marks. However,


1 mark is deducted for each incorrect answer. Jacob answered 30 questions for
a total of 78 marks.
Determine the number of correct and incorrect questions Jacob answered. (2 marks)

(d) A polynomial function is given by f (x) = 3x3 + 4x 2 − 13x + 6 .

(i) Show that 3x − 2 is a factor of f (x). (1 mark)

(ii) Using long division method or by any other means, write down the other
two factors of f (x). (1 mark)

(e) The box shown below has a height of x cm, a width of ( x + 2) cm and a length of
( x + 3) cm.

(iv) Describe fully the single transformation that maps the graph of

(b) Mountain climbers reached the top of a mountain by scaling two sections of the
mountain as shown below. Section 1 forms from A to B (1500 m at an angle of
15° to the horizontal) and Section 2 forms from B to C (1200 m at an angle of 35°
to the horizontal).

(ii) After how many years would 88.1% of the brand new flat TV screens
manufactured would fail? (1½ marks)

The company that manufactures the brand new flat screen TV gives warranty
period of 2 years for the TV screen. If the TV screen fails within this period, it
will be replaced by the company.
(iii) If the company manufactures 2 250 TV screens, approximately how
many of this brand new flat screen TV will be replaced? (1½ marks)

(b) A women’s club from an outer island sells masi (tapa) directly to buyers on order.
The cost to make x masi is C(x) = $ (52x + 5). The selling price per masi depends
on the number of masi, x ordered and is given by S(x) = $ (100 – 4x).

(i) Show that the revenue earned for selling x masi in dollars is
R ( x) = 100 x − 4 x 2 (1 mark)

(ii) Show how the profit equation P ( x) = −4 x 2 + 48 x − 5 can be obtained. (1 mark)

(iii) What would be the number of the orders that will earn the club a
maximum profit? (2 marks)

(iv) Calculate the maximum profit that can be obtained. (1 mark)
