Design a interior slab to cover a room with internal dimensions of 4.0m x 5.

0 m and 230 mm
thick brick wall all around. Assume a live load of 3kN/m^2 and a finish load of 1 kN/m^2. Use
M20 concrete and Fe 415 steel. Assume mild exposure condition.

1. Data:
fck ≔ 20 MPa

fy ≔ 415 MPa

Here shorter span is 4 m

Over all depth up-to 3.5 m span is

4m
D ≔ ――― = 125 mm
40 ⋅ 0.8
Let us assume the over all depth for 4m
span is (20% more)
D ≔ 1.2 ⋅ ((125 mm)) = 150 mm

Provide
D ≔ 150 mm

Assuming 10 mm bar and 20 mm clear cover

The effective depth considering shorter edge

dx ≔ D - 20 mm - 5 mm = 125 mm

The effective depth considering longer edge

dy ≔ D - 20 mm - 10 mm - 5 mm = 115 mm
Hence Effective spans are

lx ≔ 4000 mm + dx = 4.125 m or lx ≔ 4000 mm + 230 mm = 4.23 m

Take less of the above values

lx ≔ 4.145 m

ly ≔ 5000 mm + dy = 5.115 m or ly ≔ 5000 mm + 230 mm = 5.23 m

Take less of the above values

ly ≔ 5.135 m

ly
r ≔ ―= 1.239
lx As the ratio between longer edge to shorter edge is less
than 2, hence it is a two way slab.

2. Loads on slab:

a. Self weight wself ≔ 25 ――3

m m2

kN
b. Finish Load wfinish ≔ 1 ――
m2

kN
c. Live Load wlive ≔ 3 ――
m2

kN
Total Load wtotal ≔ wself + wfinish + wlive = 7.75 ――
m2

Factored Design Load

kN
w ≔ 1.5 ⋅ wtotal = 11.625 ――
m2
Design Moment: (Annex D)

αx value calculation:

Negative moment at the continuous edge:

ly
r ≔ ―= 1.239 r1 ≔ 1.2 αx1 ≔ 0.043
lx
r2 ≔ 1.3 αx2 ≔ 0.047
Interpolating

αx2 - αx1
αx_end ≔ αx1 + ―――⋅ ⎛⎝r - r1⎞⎠ = 0.045
r2 - r1

Similarly positive moment at mid span

ly
r ≔ ―= 1.239 r1 ≔ 1.2 αx1 ≔ 0.032
lx
r2 ≔ 1.3 αx2 ≔ 0.036

αx2 - αx1
αx_mid ≔ αx1 + ―――⋅ ⎛⎝r - r1⎞⎠ = 0.034
r2 - r1
αy value calculation:

Negative moment at the continuous edge:

αy_end ≔ 0.032

αy_mid ≔ 0.024

Moment calculation:

a) Moment per unit meter at the mid sections in x and y direction are

Mx_mid ≔ αx_mid ⋅ w ⋅ lx 2 ⋅ 1 m = 6.702 m ⋅ kN

My_mid ≔ αy_mid ⋅ w ⋅ lx 2 ⋅ 1 m = 4.794 m ⋅ kN

b) Moment per unit meter at the end sections in x and y direction are

Mx_end ≔ αx_end ⋅ w ⋅ lx 2 ⋅ 1 m = 8.899 m ⋅ kN

My_end ≔ αy_end ⋅ w ⋅ lx 2 ⋅ 1 m = 6.391 m ⋅ kN

pt_provided ≔ ―――――⋅ 100 = 0.314

It is clear form the graph that for 93.432 MPa

value the multiplying factor will be very high.
So it can de concluded that deflection will not
occur at the slab.
