Design an RCC column for working axial load of 2000ᶁᵪ.

The size is given as 450 ᶃᶃ ×

600 ᶃᶃ and its unsupported length as 3 ᶃ. Use M20 and Fe415 grade steel. The column is
fixed at both the ends.
Solution:

1. Data
a) Major Axis: x axis

b) Dx ≔ 600 mm

Dy ≔ 450 mm Ag ≔ Dx ⋅ Dy = ⎛⎝2.7 ⋅ 10 5 ⎞⎠ mm 2

c) Working Load P ≔ 2000 kN

d) Unsupported length l ≔ 3000 mm

e) fck ≔ 20 MPa

fy ≔ 415 MPa

2. Check for short or long column:

Assuming the column is fixed at both the ends,

leff_x ≔ 0.65 ⋅ l = ⎛⎝1.95 ⋅ 10 3 ⎞⎠ mm

leff_y ≔ 0.65 ⋅ l = ⎛⎝1.95 ⋅ 10 3 ⎞⎠ mm

leff_x
――= 3.25 ((3.25 < 12))
Dx

leff_y
――= 4.333 ((3.25 < 12))
Dy

Hence, the column is short column.

3. Minimum Eccentricity

l Dx
ex_min ≔ ―― + ―― = 26 mm
500 30

l Dy
ey_min ≔ ―― + ―― = 21 mm
500 30

4. Check for loading condition

0.05 ⋅ Dx = 30 mm 0.05 Dx > ex_min

0.05 ⋅ Dy = 22.5 mm 0.05 Dy > ex_min

Hence cl.39.3 can be used for short axially

loaded column.

5. Factored Load

Pu ≔ 1.5 ⋅ P = ⎛⎝3 ⋅ 10 3 ⎞⎠ kN

6. Design Longitudinal Reinforcement

Pu = 0.4 ⋅ fck ⋅ Ag + ⎛⎝0.67 fy - 0.4 ⋅ fck⎞⎠ Asc

Pu - 0.4 ⋅ fck ⋅ Ag
Asc ≔ ――――― = ⎛⎝3.111 ⋅ 10 3 ⎞⎠ mm 2
0.67 fy - 0.4 fck
Area of 4-25 mm bar at the corners
2
((25 mm))
A1 ≔ 4 ⋅ 3.14 ⋅ ―――― = ⎛⎝1.963 ⋅ 10 3 ⎞⎠ mm 2
4
Area of additional 4-20 mm bar
2
((20 mm))
A2 ≔ 4 ⋅ 3.14 ⋅ ―――― = ⎛⎝1.256 ⋅ 10 3 ⎞⎠ mm 2
4
Asc_provided ≔ A1 + A2 = ⎛⎝3.219 ⋅ 10 3 ⎞⎠ mm 2

Asc_provided > Asc Asc = ⎛⎝3.111 ⋅ 10 3 ⎞⎠ mm 2

Percentage of steel provided

Asc_provided
pprovided ≔ ―――― ⋅ 100 = 1.192
Ag

Minimum steel is 0.8% and Maximum steel is 6%

0.8 < pprovided < 6

7. Lateral Ties

Tie Diameter should be more than max of

25 mm
――― = 6.25 mm and 6 mm
4
So let us provide 8 mm tie bars

Tie spacing should be less than the minimum of the following

a) 450 mm

b) 16 ⋅ 20 mm = 320 mm

c) 300 mm

So let us provide spacing of 8 mm @ 300 mm c/c
