Proportional Relationships Lesson Plan and Reading Connection

There are five content standards and five process standards for Secondary
Mathematics. The five content standards are Number and Operations, Algebra, Geometry,
Measurement, and Data Analysis and Probability. The five process standards are Problem
Solving, Reasoning and Proof, Communication, Connection, and Representation. The target
grade level I am focusing on is seventh-grade mathematics students, specifically focusing on
them learning proportional relationships. The learning target for the lesson is to identify how to
correctly set up a proportional relationship given real-world and mathematical situations. The
main elements of this lesson will be for students to know how to grab key information from word
problems, set up a proportion, and solve the proportion for the missing variable. My opening
activity will contribute to the main target by having students identify key information in a
paragraph. Later in the class period students will participate in an activity that will have them go
through examples and communicate with others to strengthen their understanding of
proportional relationships. Lastly, the students will use their notes and problem-solving skills as
a guide to complete the homework. Eventually, students will be quizzed on this material and will
demonstrate their ability to make connections in problems and justify their reasoning. Through
this lesson and assignment, the students will be using all of the processes that are essential for
mathematics.

Reading/Literacy:
There are many ways that reading and literacy are embedded in the mathematics
classroom. The first way that reading is involved in all classrooms is through written instructions.
Students need to be able to read the printed material and understand what is expected of them
in that assignment, quiz, test, or activity. In a mathematics classroom, an example of this is
students being told in the instructions to show their work for full credit, however many students
skip over this detail. Another way that reading and literacy are important in all classrooms is
through content-specific vocabulary. In the mathematics classroom, this includes new words
and their definitions, symbols and their meanings, and occasionally different definitions for
words students already know. If this distinction is not understood prior to the lesson students
will be confused for the entirety of the lesson. Students need to be able to read and understand
the definitions before learning the related content. If students have difficulty understanding the
word definitions of the symbols used in the classroom, they will have difficulty comprehending
the lesson, and further difficulty completing the assignment. A direct example of this is the word
sum. When students first hear it, they might assume that the instructor is saying some meaning
a few or a couple, instead of sum meaning the addition of numbers. They also need to
comprehend that this symbol, Σ, represents the sum of the numbers. Also, students in the
mathematics classroom will be required to read and comprehend the textbook occasionally as
an introduction to, or further development of the material. An example of this textbook material
is word problems in assignments and examples. My lesson plan is an example of this because it
focuses a lot on finding key information in word problems. To correctly set up a proportion the
students will need to take the correct details out of the word problem and understand where in
the proportion each piece of information belongs. Reading and comprehension will be a key
factor in completing the problem. Word problems show up throughout all grade levels of
mathematics whether it be proportional relationships, geometry, probability, and much more.
Students must be able to use reading and literacy skills in order to understand the mathematics
content.
