CASE ANALYSIS
A solo-parent mother named Myra sought financial help from the CSWD. At 37,
Myra is still good looking and in shape despite having delivered seven (7) children, 4 of
her children were from her husband while the 3 were from her two other men. She and
her husband got separated after the birth of their 4 th boy child. It is when the husband
suspected their 4th child was Myra’s child from another man. According to Myra, this 4 th
child was presently adopted by her friend from Tarlac. Moreover, two of her children
were with their in-laws in Baguio City.
For now, Myra tried to keep some of their children in her custody namely,
Evangeline 18 years old, Becbec 8 years old, and Jazmin, 4 ½ years old. One of her
daughter named KC 6 years old was previously in the custody of a certain child-caring
institution. KC was discharged from said shelter after her mother Myra refused to
voluntarily commit the child to the said institution. Apparently, at first the child-caring
institution did not want to discharge KC after seeing the miserable economic condition
of the family. The discharge of KC pushes Myra to seek for financial assistance from a
social welfare agency.
Furthermore, there were times when the family could not afford to have three
meals a day. Becbec and Jazmin, despite their ages, have not been able to attend
school because Myra just could not afford to pay their school fees, buy their school
supplies and uniforms. Myra prioritizes Evangeline’s study thinking that she could help
once she finished her study. Becbec and Jazmin were in the street playing the whole
day often without food to eat for their lunch, since there’s no one to look after them
considering that their mother was looking for laundry work while Evangeline was in
School. According to neighbors, there were times that they would hand over food for the
two children so that the two would have something to eat. Thus, the social welfare
agency recommended to commit the two to another child-caring institution that could
send them to school.
The commitment of KC in another institution was found inevitable when the
eldest daughter Evangeline reported that several times KC was abused physically by
their mother. Evangeline also added that she heard her mother saying that KC was not
the daughter she placed at the first child-caring institution because of some inborn
marks that were no longer there. There were times when Evangeline became quietly
rebellious for she seemed to be carrying the burden of seeing her family in a despicable
situation. At one time she even attempted to commit suicide.
Myra was referred by the social worker to a psychologist for psychological
evaluation and counseling. She manifested some erratic behavior like beating KC
among her younger children when she had no laundry job. She was suspicious of other
people’s motives, made hearsays about them, and got easily angry. Her initial
counseling with the psychologist revealed a lot of fears, anger, hostilities, and desire to
get even with people whom, she said, had hurt her. She revealed that she was an
adopted child, and was physically abused during her childhood by her adopted mother,
however she learned a lot of household chores from her adopted mother. She also
emphasized her adopted father’s love and care after her adopted mother died from an
illness. It was also discovered after Myra disclosed that she was sexually abused by her
adopted relatives during her childhood. Those days, she could not tell anyone about her
ordeal, for she was threatened by the alleged perpetrators that she will be killed if she
will tell anyone about the abuse.

Based on the case of Myra, identify the components of casework using the guide
below;
1. Person (3 pts)
2. Problem (8 pts)
(Identify the three types of problem, based on the case presented above)
-Presenting or Immediate Problem –this is a type of problem where the client initially
disclosed to the worker during the first engagement.
Myra sought financial help from the CSWD. She has 7 children at the age of 37;
that is 4 children from her husband and the other 3 children were from the other two
men. Myra and her husband got separated after her husband suspected that her 4 th
child wasn’t his own. The 4th child in result was adopted by her friend in Tarlac and two
of her children resided with her in-laws in Baguio City. Furthermore, three of her
children namely, Evangeline 18 years old, Becbec 8 years old, and Jazmin 4 ½ years
old were in her custody. Her daughter KC, a 6-year old child was recently discharged
after Myra declined to voluntarily commit to the child-care institution regardless of their
poor economic situation.
In addition, there were occasions when the family could not afford to have three
meals a day. She couldn’t send both of her daughters, Becbec and Jazmin to school.
Myra just couldn’t afford to pay their school fees, purchase their school supplies and
uniforms. In connection with this, she’s hoping that Elizabeth, her 18-year old daughter
can complete her studies and might help them soon raise their standard of living.
Becbec and Jazmin was always playing on the street all day without anything to eat for
their lunch, as Myra was searching for laundry work while Evangeline was in school.
There were moments when the neighbour would give out food to the two children so
that the two would have something to eat.
-Underlying Problem-this is a type of problem wherein the overall situation is created
and tends to perpetuate the immediate problem.
Underlying Problem
- The underlying
-Working Problem-this refers to those contributory factors that stand in the way of
remedy and prevention which must be dealt where change also takes place.
