OmniScan MX2 Training Program

Corrosion Analysis and Reporting

V4.3R2
MX2 Training Program - Corrosion Mapping Analysis- Overview
 Analysis of corrosion mapping data is primarily achieved through
manipulation of the color palette on the position C-scan for maximum
contrast displaying low areas of corrosion, and individual data point
analysis on the A-scan and S-scan for evaluation of anomalies, corrosion
characterization, and elimination suspect readings.
 Analysis also includes adjusting the gate position and gate logic for the
appropriate thickness reading (T A/, T B/-A/, etc.).
 Color = thickness in corrosion C-scan. Color = amplitude in weld
inspection.
Corrosion Mapping Analysis - C-scan Thickness Range
 The data is normally acquired with the color palette of the position C-scan
scaled over the entire thickness range and then changed in analysis mode
because the corrosion condition is not known prior to inspection.
 In the example below of a 20mm component, the original acquisition was
taken with the color palette scaled over a range from 2-20mm.

Corrosion Mapping Analysis - C-scan Thickness Range cont.
 The thickness range entered in Gates>Thickness>Min-Max is designed to
limit the thickness readings for the Tmin and TminZ so that near surface
anomalies, no gate detection data points, scanner anomalies, and baseline
noise does not corrupt the real minimum reading detected.
 In the example below no readings can appear in the Tmin reading <2mm.

Corrosion Mapping Analysis - C-scan Color Palette
 Tap the bottom or top of the color palette and observe the same thickness
range that was entered in Gate>Thickness. (2-20mm).
 This scale is defaulted to the same value but has a different function and is
independently configurable.
 Prior to changing min-max, the color of the C-scan indicates that the
approximate range of thickness readings is contained in the blue area of the
color palette.

Corrosion Mapping Analysis - C-scan Color Palette cont.
 Increase the minimum value until one or more red pixels appear in the C-
scan. Use both the course and fine increment.
 In the example below a red pixel appears at a thickness of 13.12mm. The
red pixel identifies the thinnest reading in the C-scan and area of most
severe corrosion.
Corrosion Mapping Analysis - C-scan Color Palette cont.
 Position the data cursers on the red spot to visualize the probe aperture in
the S-scan, and individual A-scans.
 Visualize the A-scan and ensure that the reading is valid and not a result of
the interface at 0mm interfering with the gate or some other anomaly.
 Reposition the gate if necessary to update the C-scan.
 Corrosion is typically reported as the thinnest data point and includes a
general summary of the overall condition. 20mm

Corrosion Mapping Analysis - C-scan Optimization
 A data point where no indication is detected in the selected gate will result
in a white pixel and will not corrupt the Tmin or TminZ reading.
 A no synchronization gate data point as used in the Hydroform or a water
wedge will appear as a grey pixel.
 It is normal to have some missed data points due to unfavorable beam
orientation from the corrosion.

TF_LeachingSample.opd
Corrosion Mapping Analysis - C-scan Optimization
 In the example below the signal short of gate A is not detected resulting in a
white no detection color pixel in the C-scan.
 This can be fixed by repositioning the gate a few mm shorter.
 Repositioning or lowering the gate while performing analysis is common
and necessary to ensure the optimum C-scan for analysis and reporting.
MX2 Corrosion Mapping Analysis - C-scan Optimization
 In the example below the signal at the beginning of gate A is from the
surface interface and generates the red pixel in the C-scan. It is not an
indication of a low reading.
 This can be fixed by repositioning the gate.
 It is always necessary to visualize the A-scan and S-scan for a complete
understanding of the corrosion condition.
Corrosion Mapping Analysis - C-scan Optimization
 In the example below, the surface interface signal in gate I (Yellow) appears
at 4mm due to use of a water wedge that was not using the synchronization
on echo feature.
 This is corrected by using the A/-I/ gate source resulting in the correct
thickness reading of 9.66mm instead of the A/ reading of 13.66mm.

Corrosion Mapping Analysis - Readings Overview
 Readings are available in preconfigured lists by application or by selecting
them individually in Measurement>Readings.
 8 readings are displayed in two groups of 4 that can be toggled by touching
the screen in the user area.
 The readings related to corrosion mapping are pictured below and will
appear in the indication table and reports.
Corrosion Mapping Analysis - Readings - T(A/1)
 The T(A/I) reading will display the thickness of the component at the
position of the data cursor.
 This reading is dependent on the thickness source selected in
Gate\Alarm>Thickness>Source.
 This can be changed at any time including in analysis.
C Corrosion Mapping Analysis - Readings - Material Loss (ML)
 The ML reading displays the amount of material loss as a percentage of the
part thickness entered in Group\Part>Part>Thickness for the current data
point. A 3.7mm thickness reading = 58.9% material loss of a 9mm part
Thickness.
 This reading is dependent on the thickness mode selected in
Gate\Alarm>Thickness>Source.
Corrosion Mapping Analysis - Readings - Tmin
 Tmin reading displays the lowest reading detected during the acquisition and
will reset when a new acquisition is started.
 The Tmin reading will only display the lowest reading within the range that
was defined in Gate>Alarms>Thickness>Source>Min-Max.
Corrosion Mapping Analysis - Readings - S(Tmin) and I(Tmin)
 The S(Tmin) reading displays the location on the scan axis from which the
Tmin reading was detected. (Blue horizontal ruler on C-scan)
 The I(Tmin) reading displays the location on the index axis from which the
Tmin reading was detected. (Green vertical ruler on C-scan)

426mm scan axis

Corrosion Mapping Analysis - Readings - TminZ
 TminZ reading displays the lowest reading within the rectangular zone on
the C-scan created by the reference and measure cursors.
 The TminZ reading is dependent on the thickness mode selected in
Gate>Thickness>Source.
 The TminZ reading will only display the lowest reading within the range that
was defined in Gate>Alarms>Thickness>Source>Min-Max.
Corrosion Mapping Analysis - Readings - S(TminZ) and I(TminZ)
 The S(TminZ) reading is the position of the TminZ reading on the scan axis
within the C-scan. (Blue horizontal scale on C-scan)
 The I(TminZ) reading is the position of the TminZ reading on the scan axis
within the C-scan. (Green vertical scale on C-scan)
 The Angle(TminZ) reading is the focal law within the probe aperture of the
TminZ reading.
Corrosion Mapping Analysis – Indication Table
 The indication table is used to document individual data points or areas of
corrosion to be used in the report generator.
 When an indication is added to the table it will include a screen shot of the
current view and the 8 readings selected.
 Comments are also available for individual entries or the entire report.
