This excellent book integrates rock
physics, sedimentology, and stochastic
inputs for seismic inferences to reduce
risks in petroleum exploration and
production. It is a must-read for graduate
students, academics, and professionals in
petroleum and seismic geosciences. I
strongly recommend it for purchase by
librarians and individuals.
Chapter 1 on rock physics computes
upper (diagenetically cemented) and
lower (loose) sands, and predicts
V(P) and V(S) (compressional- and
sheer-wave velocities) from knowledge
of clay content and porosity of sandstone
and carbonate reservoirs. Slopes of
regression lines indicate porosity due to
diagenesis (high slope), and low slope
indicates porosity due to sedimentation.
Combined V(P) and V(S) information
predicts amount of gas and water in
reservoirs. An integrated theoretical,
empirical, and heuristic model including
rock physics and geological concepts
then provides precise information on
lithology, porosity, fluid type, and fluid
saturation from seismic data.
Chapter 2 on rocks and their
texture and compaction indicates
ambiguities in above inferences from
V(P) versus porosity or V(P)/V(S)

versus acoustic impedance in mixtures
of sand and shales. Rock physics
information discriminates correct
lithologies at all depths for such
mixtures. Rock physics templates
are also useful to predict lithology,
porosity, and presence of hydrocarbons.
Chapter 3 on statistical rock physics is
weak because only linear models are
emphasized. Since real reservoirs are
complex, nonlinear models are more
appropriate. Fuzzy logic, neural network,
genetic algorithm, multi-dimensional
time series, and multi-resolution wavelets
should have been discussed.
Chapter 4 covers polarity of soft and
hard sands in shales, correct inferences
for bright and dim spots, deterministic
and probabilistic AVO analysis, elastic
inversion using rock physics and geology.
Chapter 5 gives five detailed case
studies from the North Sea and offshore
west Africa, which would be very useful
to students and professionals. Chapter 6
titled Workflows and Chapter 7 titled
Problems would be good for students.

This reasonably priced book is
excellent for petroleum geoscientists
wishing to learn 3-D seismic technology,
a key tool for mapping subsurface
reservoir quality and hydrocarbon
distribution. Mathematics are minimal
but sufficient. I strongly recommend
it to all librarians, academics, students,
and professionals.
Chapter 1 indicates the importance
of subsurface geology, structures,
faults, and reservoir quality for
efficient hydrocarbon exploration and
production. Geology based on sparse
borehole data is augmented by 3-D
seismic data at exploration and
development stages and 4-D seismic
data for production management.
Chapter 2 is on 3-D seismic data
acquisition and processing, mainly in
offshore regions, and deals with noise
and error removals to give correct maps
and cross sections in a cost-effective
manner. Marine 3-D acquisition by four
component geophones gives P and S
(compressional and shear) wave
velocities by systematic gathering along
dip directions (along strike for salt
domes). Three-dimensional seismic data
on land are costly and avoided.
Processing is similar for 3-D and 2-D.
Pre-processing includes minimum-phase,
noise and multiples removal, binning,
stacking, and migration. Post-migration
processing is of much geological interest.
Chapter 3 on structural interpretation
is on mapping key horizons and
locating traps (anticlines, faults,
and unconformities) using synthetic
seismograms, vertical seismic profiles
on boreholes, and 3-D viewing
using workstations.
Chapter 4 deals with geological
interpretation based on seismic
resolution, seismic stratigraphy, and
3-D tools: automatic gain control,
time-horizon and coherence slicing,
3-D viewing, and neural networks.
Chapter 5 on amplitude inference
includes bright and dim spots, polarity
reversals, AVO (amplitude vs. offset),
and Ro (vitrinite reflectance) versus
G (gradient) crossplots for detection
of hydrocarbons. Rock physics is

used for seismic modeling to infer
fluid/matrix properties.
Chapter 6 on inversion gives reservoir
quality and Chapter 7 is on 3-D
visualization. Chapter 8 on time-lapse
(4-D seismic) is useful for production
management. Two appendices on
workstations and a glossary are helpful.

This book originated from a
conference held by the Geological
Society of London in 2000. The book
consists of 17 papers by different authors
on various aspects of dolomitization.
The first three papers review the
current ideas on the origins of
dolomites, and the subsequent papers
focus on specific examples.

A comprehensive review paper by
H. G. Machel discusses current ideas
on the origins of dolomite and is
required reading! That paper also
contains an extensive list of modern
references. This book contains
approximately five papers on North
American examples and eight papers
describing examples in other parts of
the world. Several papers deal with
dolomitization processes associated
with Mississippi Valley type ore
deposits. The paper by D. Clark et al.
is a detailed description of the
reservoir properties of Arab carbonates
in the Al Rayyan field, offshore Qatar.
The paper by F. Jerry Lucia on the
origin and petrophysics of dolostone
pore space refutes the common idea
that the dolomitization process creates
12% porosity. Instead, Lucia proposes
that the dolomites inherit the
porosity and fabric of the precursor
limestone and over-dolomitization
reduces the original porosity.
However, in Lucia’s example of
Paleozoic dolostones, the dolomitization
process strengthened the unit and
inhibited the loss of porosity due
to compaction.
In summary, this book provides a
wealth of current knowledge on various
aspects of dolomitization related to
reservoir rocks. The extensive references
also help with research that is more
detailed. This is a “must have” book
for groups working with dolomite
reservoirs or for geologists exploring for
diagenetic traps.
