Personal Statement

Throughout High school and College I have thoroughly enjoyed doing Media Studies. It
allows me to be creative but also whilst learning the technical details which lead to the end
product. Media studies allows me to enjoy my lessons and challenges me with each task. It
is for this reason that I wish to continue studying media at university.

In media I have developed my media skills on a variety of subjects including advertising,

production and film making. I have particularly enjoyed a recent coursework module on
adaptation. This has given me the opportunity to turn a programme into a film. I have chosen
to turn prison break into a film by being creative, I’ve changed the storyline and the
characters of the original and put my own twist on it. I had to use my creativity to think about
how the storyline could play out and what roles each character will play in the film.

I can easily identify the key facts and present them in a logical manner. In Media I have
learnt to develop my team skills, where I have worked in a group to brainstorm ideas. We
have done tasks that allow me to use my research skills for when we need to find
information. For example, I am currently working as a team to create an advert for sport. My
role is producing the advert. I have to cast a group of people to see if they are fitting to my
advert and then I am filming each advert, overall there are three adverts. For this task we
researched different sport adverts to brainstorm ideas. The research allowed us to get a
better idea of what content we should put into our advert. Then each advert will have to be
edited and made perfectly. I have had the opportunity to develop my editing skills by using
different softwares such as Adobe Premiere Pro and Adobe Photoshop both of those
softwares at first were challenging but by me getting experience on them it allowed me to get
better and experiment different things. So far I have edited a poster and a magazine but In
my current work I am editing a range of adverts. Additionally, I have made a ‘one-off’ radio
show where I had to make a script and choose a range of sound effects and condemn an
interview. This would all then go into my radio show where I was a co host with someone
else in my class, it allowed me to work well under pressure because it was all live and if you
were to do it wrong you would have to start it all again. The content we planned to put in the
radio show was also challenging because we had a set target audience that we were trying
to reach out to. Also in Media I have presented powerpoints in front of the class where I have
confidently shared my ideas to the other members in my class. When I presented my
powerpoint I enhance my communication skills, as I was speaking about the different topics
of my powerpoint whilst answering any questions off my fellow pupils. Other than just
working in a team I have also worked independently when I am researching for the work that
I have been set for and I find the best information for my work. When I am doing work I like
to keep organised because it allows me to keep on top of my work and then I will not miss
any deadlines that are given to me. My time management is good, I meet all deadlines that
my teacher gives out. Time management is key because it allows me to keep on top of my
work and to produce the best possible work I can achieve.

Since the age of 15 I have actively sought part time work in order to develop my social and
interpersonal skills. Whilst studying my GCSE's at Culcheth High I represented the school
football team from Year 7 to Year 11. I was actively involved in the sports department, where
I helped on several occasions to organise Primary school sports days with local schools. In
addition, I went away on several trips to Malaga on a language exchange and a watersports
to the Lake District. I also took part in the annual ski trip to various destinations in Europe. I
am excited to face this new challenge that university has to offer.
