EARTHQUAKES

Malaysians think that earthquakes will never happen in this country. However, latest events
seem to prove otherwise. The 2009 Bukit Tinggi earthquake, the Baling earthquake in 2013 and
the deadly Ranau earthquake in 2015 all show that an earthquake can hit Malaysia at any time.
We cannot predict or prevent them. But, when they come, what should we do?

During an earthquake, it is important not to panic. Stay calm and cover your head and neck with
your arms and hands. Take shelter by being under a sturdy table. Sit there until the quake stops.
Do not rush outside. You should never stand next to a window or near heavy objects that could
fall on you. Do not use elevators as you might get trapped in it if there is a power failure.

After an earthquake, be prepared for aftershocks. Using matches or candles can cause fire, so do
not use them. Stay out of damaged buildings, and listen to the radio or television for information
from the authorities. Stay away from beaches as earthquakes can cause large ocean waves called
tsunamis. Move to higher ground. Do not stand near trees, lamp posts, power lines or concrete
structures.

WHY I ENJOY LISTENING TO GHOST STORIES

I love listening to ghost stories. I think listening to ghost stories is like riding a
rollercoaster. You ride it for the thrill and excitement that comes from being scared.
Well, I am not really a fan of such rides, so listening to ghost stories is my way of
experiencing the fear and thrill.

My grandfather is an amazing storyteller, especially in telling ghost stories, but

my younger brother does not like it at all. Usually, my sister and I would be very excited
when our grandfather calls us and say that he has a story to share. Sometimes, I would
keep a pillow close by, just in case it gets too frightening!

Last week, he told us a story about a haunted road in a village. Motorists who
drove along that road at night would see an old man crossing the road and smiling at
them. The next thing they knew, the old man would be sitting at the back seat of their
vehicles before he disappeared into the air! This story was as scary as the story about his
former boarding school. I had to stop listening and pretended to get a drink to calm
myself.

Some of his stories would stay in my mind for days. One night, I heard a knock
on the window in the living room. When I went closer to check, I thought I saw a figure
standing in the shadows. The situation was similar to the story my grandfather had told.
Suddenly, the door shut behind me and I screamed loudly. However, it turned out to be
my younger brother playing tricks on me!

MY FIRST CAMPING TRIP

I remember my first camping trip with my friends a few years ago. It was a wonderful trip, although

there were some problems we had to face.

We brought along bug spray, sunscreen and camping gear and went to our camping site at the

National Park. 35 Then, we gathered some firewood, made a fire and cooked instant

noodles. 36

Before this camping trip, I had always imagined that camping in the wilderness

was a fun and pleasurable experience. I thought of doing many things such as spending the nights

watching the twinkling stars and waking up in the morning to the 37 smell of coffee.

As the night came, the campsite fell into a frightening 38 silence. I

tried to close my eyes to have a good sleep but 39 it was not possible.

The buzz of mosquitoes, the hooting pf owls and the noisy drone of cicadas kept us

40 awake for most of the night.

Sitting around a campfire, singing songs and cracking jokes were really fun. We truly

enjoyed each other’s company. The memories of my first camping trip will remain in my mind

forever.

A However, we did have some awesome moments too.

B We ate our food hungrily as our stomachs were growling with hunger.
C I was wrong.
D It was then that the forest became lively.
E It was my first and last camping trip.
F The first thing we did was set up the camp.
G An uproar of animal sounds filled the air. 8
H I look forward to going on another camping trip soon.
