01.1.13 Ism - Review of Status Part I (1) .PDF - 1561137904
There are four parts to understanding status, of which we will now cover the first three:
1. Form:
a. ﺭرﻓﻊ: doer
b. ﻧﺼﺐ: detail
c. ﺟﺮ: word after ‘of’
2. How to tell status
a. By ending sound
i. ﺭرﻓﻊ ◌ٌ or ُ◌ (un or oo)
ii. ﻧﺼﺐ ً◌ or َ◌ (an or aa)
iii. ﺟﺮ ٍ◌ or ◌ِ (in or ee)
b. By ending combination
i. Pair combinations: ﺍاﻥن ِ , ﻳﯾﻦ (aani, ayni)
ِ
ii. Plural combinations: َﻭوْ ﻥن, َ ْﻳﯾﻦ (oona, eena)
iii. Feminine plural combinations: ﺍاﺕت ٌ , ﺕتٍ ﺍا (aatun, aatin)
3. Light vs. Heavy
a. By default, ’ﺍاﺳﻢs are heavy, meaning that they have a ‘ ’ﻥن sound at the end. If you
were to recite the Muslim chart you would notice that every word ends in a ‘ ’ﻥن
sound. There are two types of heavy:
i. Heavy due to sound: the word has an ‘ ’ﻥن sound because of a double
vowel (tanween) at the end
1. Examples: ُﻣ ْﺴﻠِ ٌﻢ, َﺣﺒِ ْﻴﯿﺒًﺎ, ﺏب
ٍ ِﻛﺘَﺎ
ii. Heavy due to ending combination: the word ends in the letter ‘ ’ﻥن so it is
heavy
ِ َﻛﻠِ َﻤﺘ
1. Examples: َ ُﻣ ْﺴﻠِ ُﻤﻮْ ﻥن, ِﻛﺘَﺎﺑَﻴﯿ ِْﻦ, َﺎﻥن
b. In some special cases we can make an ﺍاﺳﻢ light, meaning we remove the ‘ ’ﻥن
sound from the end.
i. We have to be careful which kind of ‘ ’ﻥن we remove. We can only remove
the ‘ ’ﻥن if it comes from an ending tanween sound (◌, ٌ ً◌, ٍ◌) or from an

ِ ). In the word ‘’ﻧُ ْﻌ َﻤﺎﻥن, the ‘ ’ﻥن at the end is
ending combination ( َﻭوْ ﻥن, َ ْﻳﯾﻦ, ﺍاﻥن
part of the word so we can’t remove it.
c. One important thing to remember: if a word has ‘ ’ﺍاﻝل on it like ‘ َ’ﺍاَ ْﻟ ُﻤ ْﺴﻠِ ُﻤﻮْ ﻥن, it is
neither
light
nor
heavy.
d. Note that the status doesn’t change if an ﺍاﺳﻢ is light or heavy. For example, َ ُﻣ ْﺴﻠِ ُﻤﻮْ ﻥن
is ﺭرﻓﻊ, plural, and masculine. The light version, ْ ُﻣ ْﺴﻠِ ُﻤﻮ will also be ﺭرﻓﻊ, plural, and
masculine.
