On my word of honor, I have neither given nor received any help on this work.

Annmarie S. Eure

Sing to me muse, the story of gods and goddesses in their quest to retrieve the mighty

Mjolner after it had been stolen by several jotuns and given to and then hidden by the cruel ice
jotun, Trymr. Who planned to marry the fair Freya, but was outwitted by the cleverness of the

mighty gods, Thor, Loki, and Heimdall. Who plotted the scheme of sending Thor disguised as

the fair Freya, and with Loki as his handmaiden. And Thor who slayed many jotuns after

reuniting with his hammer. Recount to us this tale, goddess of story and song, beginning at

where you will it to. (Invo).

Mjolner was a mighty hammer belonging to Thunder Invoking Thor (EP1). Crafted by

the skillful dwarves, it was made so powerfully only Thor could wield Mjolner by himself.

However, the combined strength of several jotuns of ice was enough to snatch Thor’s beloved

hammer away while he slept peacefully, as a newborn child does when its every need has been

satisfied by its loving parents (HS1).

The jotuns presented the mighty Mjolner to the frost jotun, Trymr. Trymr, wanting to

hide it where only he could retrieve it, buried the mighty hammer eight leagues underground.

At this point, Thor was enraged and looked madly for his beloved hammer. He turned his

wrath to Silver Tongued Loki (EP2), god of mischief. Thor could only naturally suspect Loki, as

most troubles and grievances could be traced back to the cunning trickster god.

Silver Tongued Loki(EP2) assured Thunder Invoking Thor(EP1) that he was not the one

responsible.

“You come to me looking for revenge,” he said, “But alas! I have not stolen your

hammer, it is too powerful for even me to steal. However, if it proves my innocence even further.

I shall help you in your search for the mighty Mjolner.”

The trickster god, Loki set out to source the place where Thor’s mighty hammer had been

sequestered. First, he sought out Fair Skinned Freya(EP3), for she had a feathered cloak imbued
with magic. Magic which allowed the wearer to become invisible to the eyes of mortals, gods,

and all in between.

“Fair Skinned Freya (EP3),” he started. “I plead with you that you may grant me use of

your feathered cloak, for the mighty Mjolner has been stolen away from Thor.”

“Loki, you lie and use honeyed words as easily as a serpent strikes the heel of an

unsuspecting victim (HS2). How shall I trust you that you are not intending to make off with my

prized cloak for yourself instead of doing what you say.”

Silver Tongued Loki (EP2) pondered this for a single moment then replied “I swear with

my head and my life that I shall return your feathered cloak within three days.”

Freya reluctantly agreed to let the cunning god borrow her cloak, and Loki set off, now

bound to keep his promise. (arch1 (Freya)).

Loki searched for the next 2 days in all of the 9 worlds for Thor’s hammer, as an animal

hungrily hunts for scraps of food in the last few days before winter besets the land(HS3).Finally,

on the third day, he entered Jotunheim, the realm of the frost giants, and continued his pained

search.

He overheard some talking and entered the underground home of the frost giant, Trymr.

Him, being small of size compared to the mighty giants, was like an ant that crawls around the

house looking for morsels to take back to its home (HS4).

Whilst looking, the mischief god became distracted, and ran directly into the leg of a

mighty giant, several times his height and size. The giant seized the invisible god, and pulled off

the god’s feathered cloak to reveal Loki.

The giant furiously yelled, “Why do you intrude upon my residence, Trymr, the powerful

frost jotun, small man?”

Loki frantically replied, “I am Loki, god of mischief, the one with a silver tongue. I come

in search of Thor’s mighty hammer, Mjolner, as it has been stolen. I have been sent to find it to

clear my name.”

Hammer Stealing Trymr(EP4) bellowed a resounding laugh, louder than thunder in the

worst of storms. “I was brought Mjolner myself by my fellow jotuns of ice, I have buried it 8

leagues under the ground! I have no intention of returning it unless Fair Skinned Freya (EP3) is

brought to me to be made my wife!” he said. He let Loki down and continued, “Relay this

information to your fellow gods, and return in 8 days with my bride if you wish to receive

Mjolner again!” (Arch2 (Tyrmr)).

Loki, after returning Freya’s feathered cloak, came back to the world of gods, Asgard,

and told what he had found. The gods organized a meeting to discuss how to go about this.

Freya was heavily against the idea of marrying Trymr, and refused to go. Thunder

Invoking Thor (EP1) became increasingly angrier as no one could think of a way to retrieve the

hammer. Finally, Far Seeing Heimdall (EP5) suggested that they disguise Thor as Freya and send

him in to get his hammer.

Thor was miffed at such a wild suggestion, but seeing no better idea, reluctantly agreed.

Eight days later, Thunder Invoking Thor (EP1) was dressed in a gorgeous wedding gown,

and a thick veil covered his bearded face. He was pampered and prepared for the wedding, and

Loki shapeshifted to appear as his handmaid.

On Thor’s chariot drawn by goats, the 2 set off to reclaim the mighty Mjolner. They

arrived around midday at Tyrmr’s underground home, and the festivities began.

Sitting next to his supposed bride, Tyrmr took notice of her drinking more mead than

everyone else there.

“Dearest Freya, why do you drink so heavily, is that not too much mead for a goddess

such as you?” Tyrmr asked.

Silver Tongued Loki (EP2) expertly covered by saying, “Forgive her haste to drink so

much, powerful Tyrmr, she has not drank in 8 days out of excitement to meet you!”

Tyrmr later tried to lift his bride’s veil to kiss her lovely face, but his hand was swatted

away by Thor.

Loki seeing this, once again covered for Thor saying, “Forgive her, Lord Tyrmr, for she

has not slept in 8 days out of excitement to be wed to you!”

Tyrmr, now a bit puzzled, but overall not worried, called for the wedding to begin. The

first ceremony they would do was the giving of a gift to the bride from her groom.

Tyrmr called for Mjolner to be brought out from the ground and it was brought forth to

him by 8 jotuns.

“My dearest Freya, of fair skin and lovely locks, I present you Thor’s mighty hammer,

Mjolner,” he said.

He expected her to receive help from others to hold it, but she took it in one hand and

then tore her veil from her face, revealing herself to be in actuality Thunder Invoking Thor

(EP1).
Thor, now free from the veil, took to slaughtering every jotun in that room. Their blood

ran red and soaked into the ground, like how roots hungrily take in water after many days

without rain to nourish them (HS5).

When he had killed every jotun in Tyrmr’s home, he and Loki returned to Asgard with

the mighty Mjolner. And all were relieved of their worry over the situation.
