Nouns and Articles

I have so many books at home. I also have about 20 textbooks for teaching
English. Sometimes if I think I need a new textbook I’ll have a look online and see if
I can find a pirate copy of it. The book we’re using in class isn’t a pirate copy! The
college have paid for the software.

● ‘Book’ is a noun. Is it countable or uncountable?

4. If you need information about COVID, go to the government website.

● ‘Advice’, ‘weather’ and ‘information’ are nouns. Are they countable or


uncountable?
Uncountable nouns:
● Do not use with ‘a/an’ eg. NOT “A weather in Spain is fantastic!”
● You can use with ‘the’ or no article.
● They do not have plurals
● They always need a singular verb eg. “The weather is nice.” NOT “The
weather are nice.”

1. Which nouns can be countable or uncountable? For example: “glass” = the


material used to make windows is uncountable. “Glass is very fragile”

4. “We have 3 lights on the ceiling in this room.” COUNTABLE
5. Which nouns can you use ‘a piece of’ with, to talk about an individual item?

● ‘Manners’, ‘clothes’ and ‘belongings’ are examples of….

Plural nouns:
● Can’t be used with ‘a/an’
● You can use with ‘the’ or no article.
● They do not have a singular eg. NOT “Where are my clothe?”
● They always need a plural verb eg. “Manners are very important.” NOT
“Manners is very important.”
● If they consist of 2 parts/a double (eg. scissors, trousers, shorts, glasses, they
can be used with ‘a pair of’.)

● And finally….
Collective nouns
● You can use ‘a/an’, ‘the’ or no article.
● Describe groups of people or things
● You can use a singular or plural verb with these nouns BUT British English
prefers to use a plural verb (ARE) and American English prefers a singular
verb (IS).

The class is quite small today.

Exceptions:

Police – always takes the plural: “Police are…” Always refer to the police as “they”.
