Cyanobacteria Algae
• Prokaryote • Eukaryote

• Kingdom Bacteria • Kingdom Protista

• Unicellular and filamentous • Unicellular, multinucleate, and

forms simple multicellular forms

• Photosynthetic organisms • Photosynthetic organisms

• Do not have chloroplast but • Have chloroplast and other

have thylakoids photosynthetic pigments
DIVERSITY OF CYANOBACTERIA
• Unicellular and filamentous forms of thallus

• Thallus are covered with mucilaginous sheath

• Some members have specialized cells of heterocyst and akinete

Thallus: Nostoc
• A plant body that is not
differentiated into stem
and leaves Chroococcus
• Lacks true roots and a
vascular system

THALLUS ORGANIZATION
Thallus:
a plant body that is not differentiated into stem and leaves and
lacks true roots and a vascular system

• Unicellular: non-motile and motile

• Colony: non-motile vs motile; irregular vs regular

• Filament: simple (un-branched) and branched

• Siphonous: tube-like multinucleate structure

• Parenchymatous: leaf-like multicellular structure
