1.3.2. 523761 Risk of crush injuries and warning for oil under high pres-
sure.
• Knives and feed rollers can suddenly
move if the system is still pressur-
ised.
• The hydraulic oil is under high
pressure. Leakage from hoses and
couplings can result in the oil pen-
etrating the body resulting in serious
injury.

1.3.3. 523762 Observe the risk of crush injuries and note that the connec-
tion to the control system must be disconnected before welding.

• The edges on the covers are sharp

and can cause injuries.

2. General safety instructions

The content of this chapter is a compilation of regulations that must always be followed
when working with and during maintenance and servicing of the harvester head.
• Read, understand and follow the instructions in this manual.
• The head is an expensive and dangerous tool. It must only be used by people who
have been trained in its operation and in safety matters.
• Statutory or other applicable national regulations concerning traffic safety and work
safety areas must be followed. The operator is obligated to be aware of and comply
with them; this also applies to local regulations. Should the recommendations in this
manual differ from the regulations in your country, the local safety regulations must be
observed.
• Always use equipment and tools designed for the purpose.
• Install protective glass in the cab according to national safety regulations.
• Always wear the right work clothes.
• Always use common sense and be careful. Do not take risks!
• Fire-fighting equipment and a first aid kit with suitable equipment must be at hand.

Safety is everyone's responsibility!

Operators/mechanics are responsible for safety on and around the harvester head.

3. Safety when operating

!!WARNING!
The door switch is an important safety func-
tion and must not be blocked or disabled.
The harvester head may only be used to harvest the forest!
Using the harvester head to handle anything other than tree
stems is a safety hazard and as such completely forbidden.

NOTE
Check the guide bar, the saw chain and for signs of oil leakage
as often as possible, preferably during all downtime.

3.1. Before starting

Make a safety inspection of the head.
• Look for cracks in the machine, loose bolted joints and excessive play in bearings.
Be particularly observant to ensure that:
• The guide bar is intact and fully secured.
• The saw chain is undamaged and tensioned correctly.

3.2. Upon starting

• Ensure that nobody is close to the head.
• Test-run all functions of the head before starting work.

NOTE
Avoid running the saw motor at high revs when the machine/oil are cold.
When cold starting the machine, the hydraulic system should be
warmed up with another function, such as the feed rollers. Follow this
by making a few quick cuts to warm up and flush the saw motor.

3.3. During operation

!!DANGER!
Do not work too close to power lines! Mortal danger!
Low voltages can also be lethal!
Avoid working in the vicinity of power lines
hanging in the air or on the ground.

!!WARNING!
A worn or damaged drive sprocket may result in fail-
ure or damage to the saw chain.
Replace the drive sprocket as soon as possible!
Do not over rev the saw motor!
The saw chain can jump off.

NOTE
After 1 hour of operation, 3 hours of operation and again after 6
hours of operation, check that all bolted joints are tightened to
the correct torques (see under tab 3 “Operation and maintenance,
head”, section “Bolted joints, inspection and torques”).

3.3.1. Safety area

• The danger zone during operation is within a radius of at least 60 metres. Do not allow
anyone inside the safety area.
• Never leave the machine unattended while the engine is running.

!!DANGER!
Chain shot! Mortal danger!
Chain shot can fly from the chain if it breaks during cutting.
Turn the guide bar away from persons in the felling area
and even away from machine's windscreen.

Chain shot is a chain link or other chain part that comes loose and flies through the air
when a chain fails while cutting. This can cause serious injury and the harvester head’s
guide bar must be directed away (both front and rear) from any persons who are in the
felling area.
The machine’s safety area is not sufficient should a chain shot have an unfortunate out-
come.

4. Safety during service and repairs

• Only persons with good knowledge of the harvester head may service it.
• Be aware of the risks if several persons are working around the harvester head. In-
form colleagues about what you are working on.
• Use appropriate personal protective equipment such as protective gloves, helmet,
hairnets, protective glasses, safety shoes, etc. if the work so demands. Clothing must
be whole. Remove loose hanging clothing (e.g. tie, scarf). Do not wear clothing with
wide sleeves, wide trouser legs, etc. Remove jewellery as they can conduct electricity
and get caught in moving parts.
• Keep the service area clean:
Oily and dirty clothes represent a fire risk.
Oil and water on the floor is slippery and a fire hazard.
Ensure that all service areas and handles are thoroughly clean and free of dirt, oil and
ice.
• Servicing can be risky even if done correctly. Make sure you have the right skills, the
right information, the right tools and if necessary the right lifting equipment.
• Work according to the manufacturer's instructions when using Isocyanates.

!!WARNING!
Before working on the head with the engine running:
• Always remove saw chain.
• Remove the electrical connector for tilt up.
• Never stand between the limbing knives, grapple or feed rollers.
• Exercise care when adjusting the hydraulic pressure for the feed rollers.
The feed rollers can open and close without forewarning.
Always ensure that the engine is switched off
when working on the feed rollers.
Let no one be in the vicinity when connecting hoses from the base
machine. Residual pressure may cause parts of the harvester head to move.

Safety

4.1. Service position

The service position is used during servicing, maintenance and other situations when the
machine needs to be secured.
The service position means:
• The base machine is parked with the parking brake applied.
• The harvester head rests on flat, firm ground in the tilted down position with the feed
rollers open and the limbing knives closed.
• The engine is turned off and the ignition key is removed.
• The system voltage is cut (with the battery disconnector).
• Do not allow anyone in the cab.
• Allow the harvester head to cool and block the machine’s wheels with chocks.
• Relieve the pressure in the hydraulic system, see 3.2 Depressurizing accumulator
tanks, page 5.
• Always remove the chain from the harvester head when making adjustments and
during service work.
There may be exceptions some service procedures require the engine to be running.

4.2. Depressurising accumulator tanks

!!WARNING!
High accumulator pressure!
Risk of personal injury!
The hydraulic system must
be relieved of pressure be-
fore it is opened, such as to
change a hydraulic cylinder.
The pressure is relieved by stop-
ping the machine with the limb-
ing knives and feed rollers open.
If this does not work, the hose
(1) located on the accumulator
must be carefully loosened so that
the pressure can be released.
Note that all repairs to the
hydraulic system must be carried
out by authorised personnel.

4.3. Hydraulic oils

One in four machine operators experiences health problems caused by hydraulic oil. Ac-
cordingly, remember the following:
• Always use gloves to avoid skin contact. In case of skin contact, wash your hands as
soon as possible (there are special cleaning creams that do not require water).
• Avoid inhaling fumes from hydraulic oil, especially when the oil is warm.
• Change clothes as soon as possible if soiled with hydraulic oil, especially if it can
come into contact with your skin.
• Any eco-friendly oils can be used in order to avoid the environmental and health haz-
ards associated with mineral oils.

4.4. Measures in connection with welding on the harvester head

• The following measures must be taken to protect the harvester head electronics when
welding:
-- Switch off the computer.
-- Turn off the main power switch on the base machine.
-- Disconnect the crane cable's connection from the harvester head.
-- Connect the welding unit's earth cable as close as possible to the welding spot.

Welding and grinding may only be done on cleaned surfaces (sandblasted) and not in
areas that are filled with flammable liquids, such as tanks, hydraulic pipes and the like.

4.5. Saw unit

!!WARNING!
Risk of personal injury!
Never stand in front of the saw guide, in line with the direction of ejection
of the saw chain, or between feed rollers when the engine is running.
Always stop the engine when working on the saw mo-
tor and do not allow anyone to be in the operator's cab.
Remove the saw chain if you need to work on the har-
vester head with the engine running.
To avoid injury use protective gloves and fixed-size
wrenches when working on the saw unit.
Always use special pullers when dismantling and assembling the
hydraulic motor in order not to damage bearings and seals.
If the engine must be running: Always remove the tilt up and
tilt down connector when working on the harvester head.
Always ensure that the engine is switched off when working
on the saw unit. Always remove the saw chain (wear protective
gloves) when adjusting or servicing the saw unit.

NOTE
Risk of damage to the machine.
The saw motor must not be run without the bar and chain.
There is then a great risk that the engine seizes.
