GONPA GAZETTE

The joy that arose in me upon

returning to the monastery after
four short weeks away, took me
by surprise. Never do I remember
being so happy to be ‘home’,
wherever that was. The dogs
were so excited they almost
knocked me down on our first
morning walk! The school monks
were so excited to get their well-
earned prizes for having no visible
signs of head ringworm, and my
Muslim family was so excited to
have me back, because they are “Ani, prize?”

‘boring’ when I am away! Monastic life in India is not

If home is where the heart is, I easy, but my current level of
have found my forever home! gratitude far surpasses any
unpleasantries and the gratitude I
have previously felt. I couldn’t be
happier living where I am and
doing what I do. The more my life
becomes about serving others the
more I am happy more of the
time. Good thing, because this
month also marks seven years in
India! Eight years of being
ordained and one less living and
volunteering at the monastery.
Some times it feels like seven
days…other times, like seven
