STUDY HABITS OF BACHELOR OF TECHNICAL TEACHERS

EDUCATION ( BTTE- III )TOWARDS THE

ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE
SY 2010-2011

Chapter 1

INTRODUCTION

Successful students have good study habits. In the classrooms where

assessment for learning is practiced, students know at the outset of a unit of study what

they are expected to learn. Where in education in the broader sense is any act or

experience that has a formative effect on the mind, character or physical ability of an

individual. In its technical sense, education is the process by which society deliberately

transmits its accumulated knowledge, skills and values from one generation to another.

Study skills or study strategies are approaches applied to learning. They are

generally critical to success in school[1], are considered essential for acquiring good

grades, and are useful for learning throughout one's life. There are an array of study

skills, which may tackle the process of organizing and taking in new information,

retaining information, or dealing with assessments. They include mnemonics, which aid

the retention of lists of information, and effective notetaking.[2] While often left up to the
student and their support network, study skills are increasingly taught at High School

and University level. A number of books and websites are available, from works on

specific techniques such as Tony Buzan's books on mind-mapping, to general guides to

successful studying.

More broadly, any skill which boosts a person's ability to study and pass exams

can be termed a study skill, and this could include time management and motivational

techniques. Study Skills or habits are discrete techniques that can be learned, usually in

a short time, and applied to all or most fields of study. They should therefore be

distinguished from strategies that are specific to a particular field of study e.g. music or

technology, and from abilities inherent in the student, such as aspects of intelligence or

learning style.

As future teachers we need to be more adept in various technique or strategies

in learning so that we could impart the best knowledge we learn in the actual field of our

endeavors. For there are no such thing as dull its only a matter of positive thinking that

what we desire in life could be achieve with perseverance. According to Gardner (1999)

state that the concept of intelligence as traditionally defined in psychometrics (IQ tests)

does not sufficiently describe the wide variety of cognitive abilities humans display. For

example, the theory states that a child who learns to multiply easily is not necessarily

more intelligent than a child who has stronger skills in another kind of intelligence.

Developing our study habits in achieving a good academic performance will be

our best tool in facing all type of challenges in the future. Learning should be an integral

part of our behavior. Hence, each learner is a unique individual with different abilities,
interests, and ways of thinking and responding thus these characteristics have a

significant influence on ones learning style. It is being realized that students use

different learning strategies .They have different methods of reading, interpreting and

coding the information .Sometimes these strategies are useful, but some students

develop pathological learning strategies. To study effectively the students should be

aware of learning process. Effective study skills must be practiced in order for you to

improve. It is not enough to simply "think about" studying; you have to actually do it, and

in the process use information from what you do to get better. A schedule should be

made with the idea that it can be revised. A good schedule keeps a person from

wandering off course. A good schedule when it is properly managed, assigns time

where time is needed, but personal motivation to follow it is critical. A schedule should

take into account every class, laboratory, lecture, social event, Effective study skills

must be practiced in order for you to improve. It is not enough to simply "think about"

studying; you have to actually do it, and in the process use information from what you

do to get better. This is the central idea of this essay. Before one even begins to think

about the process of studying, there must develop a schedule. If there is not a schedule

or plan for studying, then there will be no way of allocating valuable study. A good, well

thought out schedule can be quite valuable. However, it is the student's responsibility to

develop a schedule that meets personal needs. Revise it if necessary, and most

importantly, follow it.

However there are factors that might hinder one’s the study habit. This is where

the researcher wants to study so that researcher would be able to give

recommendations to students in achieving their goals. Effective study skills must be

practiced in order for you to improve. It is not enough to simply "think about" studying;

you have to actually do it, and in the process use information from what you do to get

better.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study will be of help to the following who are considered direct beneficiaries

of the results of this study.

Students. The outcome of this study will provide students awareness in

pursuing good academic performance. And valuing good study habits to be able to

achieved our goals in life.

Teachers. They would design varied teaching strategies to answer the need of

the individual differences of each the student which will motivate them the value of good

study habits to perform well academically.

Administration. To formulate strategic plans of the school to answer the needs

of the student giving student a place which is convenient and conducive for learning that

would help develop the academic performance of the students.

The focus of this investigation is only the BTTE students of Kabasalan Institute of

Technology who were randomly selected from all BTTE students.

The only tool for gathering data was a questionnaire checklist answered by the

identified students.

The findings and recommendations of the study were considered most relevant

of BTTE students within the geographical coverage locale of the study.

The descriptive research design was used because the purpose of the study was only

to describe the study habits and the strategies and devices used in the study

development by the BTTE students as well as the difficulties they encountered.

The time and the place of the study covers only 2nd semester of school year

2010-2011. The focus of this investigation is only the BTTE students of Kabasalan

Institute of Technology who were randomly selected from all BTTE students.

The only tool for gathering data was a questionnaire checklist answered by the
