THE MARKET
In 2014, the penetration rate of mobile
phone in Madagascar is more than 50%.
Around 8,500,000 SIM Cards are active for
the 3 mobile network operators (MNOs).
Mobile money was launched in 2010 by
the 3 Malagasy MNOs (mobile network
operator): Airtel, Telma and Orange. There
are now 2,500,000 Malagasy people who
own a mobile money account, and
1,000,000 persons use it regularly for their
transaction or to pay a merchant. And it
still grows.
In comparison, there are 22,500,000
Malagasy people and only 3% have a bank
account.

Adult Malagasy citizen can get a mobile
money account for free. These accounts
support secured, real-time mobile banking
functionality enabling subscribers to
deposit and withdraw funds into their
mobile wallet, access those funds via
mobile banking and payment options as
well as utilize a variety of related functions
to make payments and manage their
money.
For the internet, there are 1,000,000
subscribers for all ISP in Madagascar, and
many cyber coffees in every neighborhood
for all connected town. Always in 2014,
about 500,000 Malagasy people are
connected to Facebook.
