NON IMMIGRANT VISA APPLICATION PROCESS


Determine your consular district and visa type.
Obtain a photo that can be uploaded and meets form specifications.
Access the form DS-160. Complete your DS-160 application online. Save often to your
desktop! Answer questions as thoroughly as possible before submitting, as incomplete forms
may not be accepted.
Print the DS-160 barcode confirmation sheet at the end of the DS-160 application on a laser
printer. After you have printed it, email the confirmation page to yourself so you have a
backup copy. The file is a PDF file, so Adobe you will need Adobe Acrobat on your computer
to open it.
Pay the visa application fee at an approved HDFC bank.
Make your appointment using your barcode number and fee receipt. If appropriate, use the
“coworkers/family members traveling together” option. Then, download and print your VFS
appointment letter.
For Mumbai district applicants only: Drop off your required documents three working days
prior to your appointment at a VFS center in Mumbai, Pune or Ahmedabad.
Report for your interview at the U.S. Embassy or Consulate fifteen minutes before your
appointment. Carry appropriate documents and follow security regulations. All applicants can
find a list of documents under their visa type in the All About Visas - Non-Immigrant Visas
section.
Approved visas are returned by courier. Click here to track your passport.
Who can apply?

Business / Tourism visa is for a person who wants to visit the U.S. temporarily for business or pleasure,
or both. It is also for a person who wishes to have medical treatment in the U.S.

What types of visas are available?

B-1/B-2 is for business, pleasure and medical. Most applicants will receive this combination visa

B-1 is for business only

B-2 is for pleasure/medical only

Required Documents:

Applicants applying for U.S. Visa at Mumbai Consulate are required to submit their application packets
to VFS Application Centers in Mumbai, Ahmedabad or Pune 3 working days in advance of their interview
date.

The applicants scheduled for U.S. Visa interview at any other post in India except Mumbai are required
to report directly to the U.S. Embassy or U.S. Consulate for their Visa Interview along with required
documents.

Notes

The Application Fee and VFS' Service Charge are nonrefundable and must be paid by each applicant.

If you live in India or Bhutan, you must appear for your visa interview at the Visa Section that has
jurisdiction over the Consular District where you have been resident for the last six months. If you
have permanently moved location in the last six months, and are not on a temporary transfer, you
should apply at the Visa Section covering your present residence. For information on Consular
Districts, please refer to the section on Consular districts on this website.

Please ensure that the interviewing post selected by you when completing form DS-160 is the same
as the Consular post where you are scheduling your interview appointment. If the two posts do not
correspond your interview appointment will not be considered as valid.
You will not be able to amend/ modify your form DS-160 without changing the CEAC barcode. You
may proceed for your interview and inform the interviewing officer about the amendment.
