1.

Suppose that blood sugar levels are normally distributed with a mean of 100 mg/dl and a standard deviation of 10 mg/dl. Perry has a blood sugar level of
85 mg/dl. Calculate and interpret Perry’s z-score.

= - 1.5 (below the mean)

In order to compute whether the individual's blood sugar level falls under any of the given 5 categories, obtain the Z score.
Z=(X-mu)/sigma, where, X is the raw score, mu is the population mean, and sigma is population standard deviation.
=(73-100)/10
=-2.7
Now, look into Z table to find area corresponding to Z=-2.7. The Z table gives area under standard normal curve to the left of Z. The required area is
0.0192. The area is less than 0.05, thus, compared to the rest of this group, the individual's blood sugar level is very low. Usually an event is declared
unusual if the prbability is less than 0.05. Under this consideration, option 1 is found suitable, and rest of the options are discarded.

2. For problem A-C assume that the random variable x is normally distributed with mean u=70 and standard deviation o=10. Find the indicated probabilities
by standardizing x to z.
a. P(x<82)
b. P(x>=95)
c. P(x>=55)
d. P(90<=x<=91)
3. Six week old babies consume a mean of u=15 ounces of milk per day, with a standard deviation o=2 ounces. Assume the distribution is normal. Find the
probability that a randomly chosen baby consumes the following amounts of milk per day.
a. Less than 15 ounces.
b. More than 17 ounces.
c. Between 17 and 19 ounces.

Solution :

Given that ,

mean =   = 15
standard deviation =   = 2

a.

P(x < 15) = P[(x -   ) /   < (15 - 15) / 2]

= P(z < 0)

= 0.5

Probability = 0.5
b.

P(x > 17) = 1 - P(x < 17)

= 1 - P[(x -   ) /   < (17 - 15) / 2)

= 1 - P(z < 1)

= 1 - 0.8413

= 0.1587

Probability = 0.1587
c.

P(17 < x < 19) = P[(17 - 15)/ 2) < (x -   ) /   < (19 - 15) / 2) ]

= P(1 < z < 2)

= P(z < 2) - P(z < 1)

= 0.9772 - 0.8413

= 0.1359
Probability = 0.1359
