1. PURPOSE
- This procedure describes the methods adopted to weld joints cleaning and pickling.
- The chemical using for pickling shall be Nabakem SR-600 which is a Stainless Scale
remover
- The safety information in this procedure is intended only as a guide to assist KNOC &
OGPE technician for safety.

3. SAFETY

- The work must be following all applicable regulations, standards and KNOC’s safety rule
pertaining to these types of systems to ensure that the working is safe and secure.

- All tasks shall be fulfilled with safety regulations. (Permit to work, etc…).

- A toolbox shall be held and all persons involved in the work will have the work to be done
and the safety aspects explained to them before any work commences.

- The area where job is to take place must be clearly marked. Fences and notices are erected
around the area, necessary announcements are made.

- OGPE technician shall be thoroughly studied the health hazards associated with chemicals
Nabakem SR-600. This means that the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) of the

4. NABAKEM SR-600 STORE AND NOTES

- This chemical should be store indoors at 20oC.

- They should be kept in an upright position with the lids tightly closed. The storage area
should be clearly defined and beyond the access of unauthorized persons. Pickling
chemicals are sensitive to high temperatures.

- Do not use Nabakem SR-600 in combination with water, acid or alkali.

- Eating, smoking and drinking should be forbidden in the pickling area.

- The pickling area should be ventilated.

- Avoid direct sunlight when acidizing in summer season

- It is more effective to use it in the mornings or evenings. Application in the evenings and
rising next morning is general used.

5. PROCEDURE

5.1 Weld joint Cleaning procedure

- Grinding is normally the only method that can be used to remove defects and deep
scratches. A grinding disc is usually adequate for treating defects of this type. The
grinding methods used should never be rougher than necessary, and a flapper wheel is
often sufficient for removing weld tint or surface contamination.

- For the removal of heat tint, brushing using stainless steel or nylon brushes usually
provides a satisfactory result. These methods do not cause any serious roughening of the
surface, but do not guarantee complete removal of the chromium-depleted zone.

- As regards the other mechanical methods, the risk of contamination is high, and it is
therefore important that clean tools that have not been used for processing carbon steels
are used.

5.2 Welded joint Pickling procedure

- Pour a path of Nabakem SR-600 to a glass or plastic cup for using.

- Paste Nabakem SR-600 on the surface of welded joint. Brush on the pickling paste using
an acid-resistant brush. Do not pickle in direct sunlight.

- Acidizing time should be minimum 30 minutes at 25oC

- Use cotton cloth or cloth brush to clean applied surface.

- Flush applied surface with copious quantities of water after application.
