confident that you are using the most up-to-date frameworks and methodologies to build and
execute effective strategies?

If so, the MBA Essentials Course will be just what you are looking for.

By providing you with an understanding of the core strategic models, tools, skills and concepts
taught by the world’s leading business schools, the course will:

 Enhance your commercial / organisational awareness;


 Fill any gaps in your business / organisational knowledge; and
 Empower you to work more collaboratively with others using a consistent set of MBA
frameworks and methodologies.

This award-winning, Mini-MBA programme consists of three live, interactive webinars combined
with a suite of online resources comprised of short videos, guidance notes and worksheets. These
have been designed to help course participants apply the core MBA tools to AstraZeneca’s business,
industry and market; but they will also provide a Foundation for you as a Young Health Programme
Global Health Leader continue to grow and develop your own organisations and/or social
enterprises.

You will join these live sessions alongside approximately 20 other people consisting of a mix of
AstraZeneca employees identified as rising talent and external young health leaders supported by
the Young Health Programme.

On completing the course, you will be provided with a Mini-MBA Certificate.

Outline

The Mini-MBA course will introduce AstraZeneca participants to seven, easy-to-follow steps, derived
from the key methodologies taught on MBA courses by the world’s leading business schools. These
steps have been designed to enhance each participant’s commercial awareness and empower them
to:
 Develop effective strategies for their team or department;
 Anticipate changes in their competitive environment; and
 Identify how they can best utilise their own energies, skills and talents and those of their
colleagues to help the business rise to new levels of competitive performance.

Course Structure
The course is split into the following 3 Modules:
Module 1 – Developing Effective Strategies –
Tentative Date: Thursday, February 9th at 1pm GMT/8am ET
Participants will learn how to analyse any market in which AstraZeneca operates and how to
collaboratively develop effective strategies using some core MBA frameworks and
methodologies.
Module 2 – Creating and Enhancing a Competitive Advantage –
Tentative Date: Tuesday, February 16th at 1pm GMT/8am ET
Participants will learn how to visually map market priorities and draw on the business’s core
strengths in order to enhance the business’s competitive advantage.
Module 3 – Responding to Change and Building for the Future
Tentative Date: Tuesday, February 23rd at 1pm GMT/8am ET
Participants will learn how to interpret change within their market and identify new opportunities
that will drive future growth.

Course Delivery
Each of the above 3 Modules will last for 1 hour and 45 minutes. They will be delivered live online
using HD video, they will be fully interactive and at regular intervals participants will work in online
breakout groups in order to apply the concepts they have learnt. On completing the three live
modules, each participant will gain access to a suite of online MBA resources (explained on the next
page) and they will be awarded AstraZeneca’s Mini-MBA Certificate.

Speaker Bio (Rupert Vernalls)


The course will be delivered by Rupert Vernalls, the founder and CEO of The MBA Academy. Rupert
has delivered Mini-MBA courses to individuals from a wide variety of leading businesses, including:
BP, Nestle, Vodafone, BT, BAE Systems, Reckitt Benckiser, Google and Facebook. Rupert has also
delivered Mini-MBA courses to leaders in over 30 NHS Trusts and he was commissioned by NHS
Provides to write their MBA workbook. Rupert regularly delivers Mini-MBA courses to professional
services firms and the course has won awards from the Legal Education Training Group. Rupert has
lectured at the US Department of Commerce, worked as a Designated Assistant for Course Planning
with Harvard Business Online and as a Module Advisor on the Bath MBA. Prior to completing his own
MBA, Rupert headed up Osborne Clarke’s intellectual property law practice in Silicon Valley,
California.

Online MBA Resources


On completing the live modules, participants will gain access to a suite of AstraZeneca branded
online MBA resources. These consist of short videos, worksheets and guidance notes that allow
participants to explore the concepts covered in the live sessions in more depth and ensure they
become embedded in each participant’s day-to-day work.

Because the online resources have been designed to sit alongside the live sessions, they consist of
the same three modules, each of which is further broken down into three elements: Learn, Apply
and Transform.

 The Learn element in each module explains the relevant MBA frameworks through short
videos.
 The Apply element helps participants understand how they can apply the MBA frameworks
to their own work though worksheets and other materials.
 The Transform element helps participants align their own energies, skills and talents with
the strategies of the business.

The online resources will be explained in more depth in the live sessions.
