Pumps:
pump is a device that moves fluids (liquids or gases), or sometimes slurries, by
mechanical action, typically converted from electrical energy into Hydraulic
energy. Pumps can be classified into three major groups according to the method
they use to move the fluid: direct lift, displacement, and gravity pumps.[1]

pump in power plant

power plants usually employ the use of different kinds of pumps for a wide range
of operations. For instance, boiler feed pumps are crucial for the operation of
power plants.
These are typically used in different stages for the delivery of feed water to boilers.
The feed water is then turned into steam, which is what turns the turbines
generating power at the power plants.

To assist in the pumping of feed water, booster pumps are also present upstream of
the feed pumps. The booster pumps which are specifically used in boiler feed
applications increase the suction pressure of feed water. This process serves to ful
fill the net positive suction head requirement of the main boiler feed pump.[3]

1-Condensate pumps collect saturated water from the
condenser hot well and pump it either to a de-aerating
heater or back into the boiler feed pump. These pumps
operate at extremely low suction pressures . [2]

As such, they are often located at the lowest level of any

pump in the power plant. They are also installed in a
suction can that is below ground level. Furthermore, the
velocity of the flow entering the condensate pipe is kept
to a minimum. This helps to limit frictional losses in the
piping.

2-Cooling Water Pumps move large quantities of water to a condenser, helping to

condense the steam into water

Condenser circulating pumps deliver cool water from freshwater sources near the
power plant and pump it through the condenser to condense exhaust steam from the
turbine. These pumps can be either located in dry pits or wet pits. If they are in wet
pits, then they are a vertical desige[3]

Double-suction pumps and concrete volute pumps are also used for power
station cooling for water duty

Attemperating part of cooling the heated water before it leaves the power station
boundary. The aim is to keep below the required maximum discharge temperatures.
These limits apply to water discharging to lakes, estuaries and to the sea, where
strict environmental requirements need to be met.
Attemperating pumps are a part of the cooling
water system in a power station. They do not
usually pump through the condensers, and
would therefore be of lower head than normal
cooling water pumps.
Some power stations provide attemperating
pumps as part of the initial station design, by
providing up to 50% or more additional
cooling water capacity to operate during the
summer months.Attemperating pumps are
usually only needed through the summer
period. In more tropical areas, attemperating
pumps may be in operation for a substantial
portion of the year.
Various types of pumps could be used for attemperating, although the basic
requirement is for high volume pumping rates. They are usually, but not always,
low head pumps, and they are very likely to be axial flow (propeller) type pumps.
Such pumps are very susceptible to poor inlet conditions, and care must be taken
with the pump intake design.[5]

3-Boiler Feed Pumps For boilers to produce steam, they first need
feedwater. Boiler feed pumps transport the feedwater at high pressure from the
deaerator tank to the boiler. It’s a crucial component of the whole boiler system.

There are two main styles for these multistage pumps: vertical and horizontal. The
classification is based on the orientation of their shafts. Both pumps are radially
split and have a casing that features a vertical joint relative to the shaft.

A significant difference between these types of boiler feedwater pumps is the

pressures that they can generate. The horizontal pumps are heavy-duty pumps
made from cast parts. Whereas, vertical pumps are made from stamped stainless
steel. Use vertical multistage pumps for pressures up to 900ft. For anything above
that, a horizontal pump is preferred. It is easier to work on horizontal boiler feed
pumps than vertical ones.

boiler feed pump can handle the pressure of up to 100 bar and Boiler Feed Pumps
handle high temperatures it require a good maintanice as well as
The quality of feedwater is also crucial when you are selecting your boiler feed
pumps. Any type of chemical reaction from the boiler feed water to the pump can
affect the boiler system.[5]
