) The crest gate shown consists of a cylindrical surface of which AB is the

base supported by a structural frame hinged at O. The length of the gate is 10
m. Compute the magnitude and location of the horizontal and vertical
components of the total pressure on AB. 10 points
B.) A cylindrical container 8m high and 3m in diameter is reinforced with two
hoops 1 meter from each end. When it is filled with water, what is the tension in
each hoop due to water? 10 points
C. ) If a 5kg steel plate is attached to one end of a 0.1m x 0.3m x 1.2m wooden
pole, what is the length of the pole above water? Use specific gravity of wood of
0.5 and that of steel is 7.85. 10 points
D.) A cube 2.2. feet on an edge has its lower half of s.g. = 1.6 and upper half of
s.g. = 0.7. It rests in a two layer fluid, with lower s.g. = 1.4 and upper s.g. = 0.8.
Determine the height h of the top of the cube above the interface. 10 points
E.) A vessel containing oil is accelerated on a plane inclined 15 degree  with the
horizontal at 1.2 m/s^2. Determine the inclination of the oil surface when the
motion is (a) upwards and (b) downwards. 10 points
F.) A 1.5m high by 1.8m wide by 4.5m long enclosed tank is filled with water
and accelerated horizontally at 5m/s^2. Determine the maximum pressure in
the tank and the total force acting on the rear end of the tank. 10 points
G.) A closed vertical cylindrical vessel, 1.5m in diameter and 3.6m high is 3/4
full of brine (s = 1.3) and is revolved about its vertical axis with a constant
angular speed. The vessel is made up of steel 9mm thick with an allowable
tensile stress of 85 MPa and has a small opening at the center of the top cover.
If the angular speed is 210 rpm, what is maximum stress in the walls. 10
points
H.) The section of a gravity dam is as shown in the figure. Assume hydrostatic
uplift to vary uniformly from full hydrostatic uplift from the heel to zero at the toe.
Determine the total reaction per unit length at the base of the dam. Use sp. gr.
of concrete = 2.4. 10 points
I.) A 1.8m diameter closed cylinder, 2.7m high is completely filled with glycerin
having sp.gr. of 1.6 under a pressure of 245 kPa at the top. The steel plates
which form the cylinder are 5mm thick with an ultimate tensile stress of 82 MPa.
