A. Definition of Motivation and Attitude

a. Motivation
Motivation is the process that initiates, guides, and maintains goal-oriented
behaviors. Motivation involves the biological, emotional, social, and cognitive forces
that activate behavior. In everyday usage, the term "motivation" is frequently used to
describe why a person does something.
Motivation is an important factor which encourages persons to give their best
performance and help in reaching enterprise goals. A strong positive motivation will
enable the increased output of employees but a negative motivation will reduce their
performance. A key element in personnel management is motivation.

b. Attitude

An attitude is a positive, negative, or mixed evaluation of an object expressed

at some level of intensity. It is an expression of a favorable or unfavorable evaluation
of a person, place, thing, or event. These are fundamental determinants of our
perceptions of and actions toward all aspects of our social environment. Attitudes
involve a complex organization of evaluative beliefs, feelings, and tendencies toward
certain actions.

B. The Similarity Between Motivation and Attitude

Attitude motivation is the practice of motivating people by influencing their

thoughts and behaviors. Attitude and motivation are closely linked and can act as
strong motivators of whether a team will work together effectively and achieve their
business goals in a timely manner. In fact, a positive attitude can directly impact the
trajectory of your career, as you will be more motivated to work hard, try new things
and further contribute to an organization’s success.
An attitude is a state of mind, while motivation is the reason you have for
behaving in a certain way. Your attitude can improve or decrease your motivation. If
you build a positive attitude within your workspace, you’ll notice that all the members
of the team are motivated to be more productive, communicate more effectively and
produce more effort for the good of the organization.

C. The Different Between Motivation and Attitude

An attitude is a set of beliefs and motivation is a reason for doing something.
This can be confused because a set of beliefs can be a reason for doing it. So you may
be motivated to learn English because your attitude towards English culture, or
towards your teacher. It is a common belief that you will not learn English if you
dislike the English teacher. There is, however, a small amount of research which
suggests that learners can in fact distinguish the messenger from the message. The
second distinction is one made in much of motivation literature. It is between
integrative and instrumental motivation. The former is related to the desire to learn
more about a culture, its language and people – to integrate more within the target
language society. The latter relates to achieving some other goals. So if you learn
English because you will get a better job if you speak this language, then your
motivation is instrumental. The literature on motivation states that persons who are
instrumentally motivated are more successful in acquiring the second language.

D. The Importance of Motivation and Attitude

a. Motivation

Motivation will helps us to achieve our goal, and motivation will help us in
self-development. Learning about motivation is valuable because it helps us
understand where motivation comes from, why it changes, what increases and
decreases it, what aspects of it can and cannot be changed, and helps us answer the
question of why some types of motivation are more beneficial than others. Motivation
reflects something unique about each one of us and allows us to gain valued outcomes
like improved performance, enhanced well-being, personal growth, or a sense of
purpose. Motivation is a pathway to change our way of thinking, feeling, and
behaving.

Motivation is not only important in its own right; it is also

an important predictor of learning and achievement. Students who are
more motivated to learn persist longer, produce higher quality effort, learn more
deeply, and perform better in classes and on standardized tests.

b. Attitude

The importance of attitude is that it is the basis for everything in our lives. Our
attitude determines how we react to adversity, our ability to grow and to learn, our
ability to overcome challenges, and create bonds with others.

E. Media
Media is the communication outlets or tools used to store and deliver
information or data. The term refers to components of the
mass media communications industry, such as print media, publishing, the
news media, photography, cinema, broadcasting (radio and television), digital media,
and advertising.

F. Teaching Media
Teaching media can be explained as media that contains some information or
instructional messages and can be used in the teaching process. Teaching media is a
media that bring messages or information that contain the aim or goal of teaching.
Learning and teaching a foreign language needs a lot of patience, energy, time,
creativity and competence. The success of the teaching and learning of foreign
language skills including English is determined by a number of factors both linguistic
and non-linguistic such as the students, the teacher, the methods, material and media
or aids used.
Language teaching media are very important to help students acquire new
concepts of, the skills and language competences. There are many kinds of media
which can be used by the teachers in the teaching learning process, but the teacher
should be selective when he is choosing kinds of media, for example like Poster,
chart, whiteboard, worksheet, etc.
