Teaching Narrative Writing to Junior High School Students Using Stick Pictures Series.

A Teaching

1. “Writing is a communicative act, a way of sharing observations, information, thoughts, or

ideas with ourselves and others” (Cohen, p. 143-159). Sokolik completes the information
about writing. She states in her article, “Writing” that writing is a physical and mental
act. It is called physical act because writers use medium to express words or ideas.

II Types of writing

III. Principles for teaching writing

Sokolik in her article “Writing” edited by Nunan states that there are three principles for
teaching writing.

1. Understand your students’ reasons for writing.

2. Provide many opportunities for students to write.
3. Clarify for yourself, and for your students, how their writing will be evaluated.
Three rubrics are suggested to the readers. However, weighted rubric is chosen.

B. Narrative

C. Picture
1. nature
“Picture series is a series of three to nine pictures, normally depicting logical or continuous
actions, situations, though or scenes in the form of sketches or drawings”. (Breitkreuz,
1972).Another source taken from
http://www.tpub.com/content/photography/14208/css/14208_22.htm may clarify the definition of
picture series. It states that picture series can be seen from two points of views:
photojournalist and non-photojournalist.

2. Criteria in making picture stories

A technical term is borrowed from
http://www.tpub.com/content/photography/14208/css/14208_22.htm, “lead photograph”. Since
the discussion is not a photograph, it is about a picture, the term “lead picture” is used.
The lead picture is the main part in the picture story. It should identify the subject matter,
relate the subject matter to the teacher’s approach, and create an impact
