PART II. READING COMPREHENSION

Directions: In this section, you will read a passage followed by several questions about it. You are to choose the one best
answer a, b, c, or d to each questions. Then on your answer sheet, find the number of the question and mark your
answer. Answer all questions following a passage on the basis of what is stated or implied in the reading passage.

A. DETERGENT
Soap is an inefficient cleanser compared with the synthetic chemical compounds called detergents. The reason
is that detergent molecules have one group of ‘hydrophilic’ atoms that like water, and one ‘hydrophilic’ group that dislike
it. The hydrophobic group attaches itself to dirt and grease. The hydrophilic group reduces the tendency of water to
cohere into drops, allowing a water-detergent mix to penetrate fibers and wash away the hydrophobic group, with the
dirt.
The Belgian chemist A. Reychler noted the effect of detergents in 1913. The first commercially available
detergent was ‘Nekal’, sold in Germany in 1917 to alleviate wartime soap shortages. The Second World War encouraged
further development aimed at cleaning uniforms in adverse conditions – for example, with only salt water.
Ordinary detergents have difficulty in dissolving protein stains such as egg; but the chemical substances called
enzymes breakdown proteins. ‘Biological’ detergents with an enzyme added were introduced in 1967 by Proctor &
Gamble of Cincinnati, Ohio.

1. What was the first commercially available detergent?

a. Nekai c. Nikal
b. Nekal d. Nikai

2. Which of the following statements is true?

3. What characteristics set detergents apart from soaps?

a. The presence of hydrophobic and hydrophilic atoms
b. The presence of water
c. The high density of detergent
d. The compactness of detergents

4. Which of the following is not easily dissolved by ordinary detergent?

a. egg stain c. chocolate stain
b. sauce stain d. not mentioned in the selection

5. Procter & Gamble of Cincanatti, Ohio introduced

a. detergents with salt water.
b. detergents with protein compounds.
c. detergents with cleanser.
d. detergents with an enzyme added.

B. In 1953 two biologist working at Cambridge University, the American James Watson and the Englishman
Francis Crick, worked out the detailed structure of DNA (deoxyribose nucleic acid) the long stretches of chain –like
protein that form the body’s genes. The instructions for human growth are contained in the genes, which control the
function of each cell in the body. The biologists’ work led to the unraveling of the genetic code.
Genetic engineering brings about the alteration of the coded sequence in the genes of a living organism by
adding new instructions of deleting some of those naturally present. By the mid-1970s scientists in America, Britain and
Switzerland were decoding the genetic instructions by which human cells form vital proteins. By 1980 human insulin had
been produced by this method and given to diabetic patients.

6. What is the first medical product of genetic engineering?

a. human penicillin c. human insulin
b. DNA d. diabetes

a. The instructions for human growth are contained in the blood.
b. Genes control the function of each cell in the body.
c. Genetic engineers could produce DNA in the laboratory.
d. The unraveling of the DNA structure led to the shrouding of the genetic codes.

9. Which of the following is implied in the selection?

a. Genetic engineering could remove genetic defects.
b. Genetic engineering could be done by all scientists.
c. Genetic engineering will always produce imperfections.
d. Genetic engineering is unproductive.

a. The Uses and Abuses of Genetic Engineering
b. Trends in Genetic Engineering
c. Genetic Codes: It’s Description
d. Genetic Engineering

The arts generally depend on ridiculous fiction, but the theater is the most ridiculous of all. Imagine asking us to
pretend that we are in Bangkok after the fall of Saigon and that Lea Salonga is a Vietnamese bar girl who kills herself
because she believes that suicide is the only solution to her problem. More than that, imagine asking us to believe that
she and all the other characters in the play talk to each other by singing. The theater is a lily that inexplicably arises from
a jungle of weedy falsities. Yet it is precisely from the tension produced by all this absurdity the theater is able to create
such poetry, power, enchantment, and truth.
