Light is all around us. It does not just let us see in the dark, but the
properties of light are important to many aspects of our lives. Reflections in rear-
view mirrors of cars help to keep us safe. Refraction through lenses of eyeglasses
or contact lens’ helps some people see better. This backgrounder is all about
visible light and how we interact with it.
Therefore, it is very important for us to understand light. In this lesson,
you will learn the properties and characteristics of light through activities and
experiments. Enjoy learning!

LET US REVIEW

Directions: Use the word provided in the radio to complete the statements below.
Write your answer on a separate piece of paper.

1. ______________ is made by vibrations.
2. Vibrations happen when something moves ____________
quickly.
3. Sound ______________ travel through the air.
4. When sound waves are fast, the sound has ____________.
5. When sound waves are slow, the sound has ______________.

LET US STUDY
Light is used to help us see – either naturally using the Sun or fire,
or with manmade objects like candles or lightbulbs. Light energy is
also used by plants, which capture the light energy from the Sun and use it to
produce their food.
PROPERTIES OF LIGHT
A. Light travels in a Straight Line and bounces back.

Try this experiment and answer the guide questions on a sheet of paper:
Experiment # 1: Describe how light is reflected or refracted.
What you need:
small mirror
old colored magazines
craft paper or coupon bond
crayons
marker
scissors
book
What to do:
1. Draw or cut out magazine pictures that have symmetry (ex. 2 halves that
2. perfectly mirror each other: stars, faces, flowers, butterflies etc.) Cut the
pictures in to half.
3. Put the mirror next to the half and see its reflection.

3
Guide Questions: (Answer this in a separate sheet of paper with the label:
Experiment #1. Answers only.)
1. What did you observe when you placed the halves of the cut-outs
beside the mirror?
2. What did you observe with the halves of the drawings when you
placed them beside the mirror?
3. Can you do this with other drawings that are not symmetrical?
Explain your answer.
4. What will happen when you cut the drawings crosswise instead of
lengthwise and place them beside a mirror? Will you get a full view of
the picture?

Just as heat and sound travel,

so does light. Light travels in straight
lines. Sometimes it bounces back
into the direction of the source. We
call this reflection. Water, windows
shiny metals, and mirrors are just
some of the many objects that
https://www.successcds.net/images/science/reflection.gif reflect light. As light travels, it
travels in a straight line. However,
when light passes from one material into a second material like mirror or water,
the light path is either bent or reflected back.
B. Light bends as it travels from one type of material to another.

Look at the two pencils. The

pencil appeared bent at the
water surface. However, when
you took it out of the glass, it
was straight. When part of it
was placed in the glass of
water, it looked bent. It even
appeared as if it was cut and its

lower end was bigger. But when you raised the pencil and touched it, it was
not been.
How is it possible? The answer is refraction. As you look at the pencil, the
top part of the pencil came directly to your eyes. Light rays from the bottom
part passed first through the surface between the water and the air. The
rays are refracted. Refraction is the bending of light as it travels from one
type of material to another like from air to water.

C. Light bends and separates into different colors of the rainbow.

Try this experiment and answer the guide questions on a separate sheet of
paper:
Experiment # 2:
What you need:
 Shallow elongated tray
 A window ledge
 Table
 Mirror with stand
What to do?
1. Set a table near a window facing bright sunlight.
2. Set a tray of water on top of the table.
3. Rest a mirror upright against one edge of the tray. The mirror should be
facing a wall. Make sure that the mirror will not fall. (You should make
use of a mirror with a stand) Refer to the illustration below)
4. Look at the wall where the ray of sun is projected. Write your
observations in a separate sheet of paper.

5
Guide Questions:
1. What did you notice about the sun’s rays that passed through the glass
of water when they strike the paper?
2. What were the different colors that you saw? Where do you usually
see such kind of colors?
3. Is it possible to obtain the same results using an artificial light like that
of a flashlight?
4. What does this activity tell us about white light?

White light has different colors which is the color of the rainbow. The
colors of the rainbow and all the other colors that we see around us are colors
that come from the light of the sun. A rainbow is formed when the light from
the sun passes through raindrops. That is why we see a rainbow after it has
rained. A rainbow is the result of sunlight breaking into different colors. In
the activity, the glass of water reflects light. As the light bends, it separates
into different colors or the colors of the rainbow, which is red, orange,
yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet or the ROYGBIV.

LET US PRACTICE

A. Directions: In each torch picture, draw the light beam that the torch
makes when switched on. Draw this illustration and answer it on a
separate sheet of paper.

B. Directions: Draw a light on the torch if the statement is true. Draw a torch and
answer it on a separate sheet of paper.

1. Light travels at a straight line

2. Sometimes it bounces back into the direction of its source. It is called

refraction.

3. Water is some of the objects that reflect light.

4. When light passes from one material into a second material like mirror or
metal, the light is either bent or reflected back.

5. Light bounces off at the different angle that it stuck the mirror.

7
LET US REMEMBER

Remember and understand the characteristics of light:

 Light travels in a straight line.
 Light bounces back and we call it reflection.
 Light bends as it travels from one type of material to another. This is
what we call refraction.
 Light bends and separates into different colors of the rainbow.

LET US APPRECIATE

Directions: Identify the category of each pictures by drawing it into the correct
table. Sort each pictures by drawing it into appropirate category. Write your
answer on a separate sheet of paper.
