Koalas live on trees and to build a koala sanctuary, the abundance of eucalyptus

trees is the prime requirement. The intermediate distance between two trees must
not exceed 10 meters since it increases the distance and time the koala has to
spend on ground which increases the risk to their life. The site for such an
establishment must be connected to a natural corridor.
The site chosen for this project is located in a city but is large enough and satisfies
various requirements to classify as a natural reserve. Two natural creeks pass
through the site which can be used to protect from bushfires as this is a bushfire
prone area.
The site is adjacent to a road and there is one road which cuts through the center of
nature reserve dividing it in two parts. The part of the site on the other side of the
road can be accessed by koalas with the use of bridges designed for them which
have already been built in different parts of Australia.
An existing heritage building, the Roto House and a koala hospital are located on the
site due to which there is public walk-in because of different purposes. The presence
of the Roto House makes the site well known to the locals.
The vegetation on the site consists of species of mainly eucalyptus trees which are
present in various sizes like small (to 10 m in height), medium (10 to 30 m), large (30
to 60m) and extra large (over 60m). The leaves of these trees are small in size but
large in number which filters the sunlight by the time it falls to the ground.
The topography of the site is almost plain with slight contours and sloping regions in
some parts which does not raise any serious concerns about the design
implementation except the drainage of rainwater.
The wind passing through the site makes the large trees sway in either direction
which demands the construction of the koala pavilion to take these movements into
account while designing.
Koalas are affected by various noises, one of which will be the sound of humans
walking on dry leaves. Since there will be koalas trying to recover from injuries, these
sounds need to be avoided in order to create a healthy environment.

With the branches of different trees overlapping each other because of their close
proximity to each other and roots of the eucalyptus trees reaching and at some point
connecting with the roots of other trees create a network of different layers of
canopies, trunks and roots. The site thus appears to be one single ecosystem which
consists of smaller ecosystems (the trees) coming to form a whole. This system of
layers leaves voids behind in the canopies and in the trunk layer which can be used
to add more space for the koalas to live in.
