A s a resident of Dhaka city for about more than 20 years I’m
comparing the urban pattern of this city’s part of old Dhaka to
the city of Venice, Rome.
URBAN PATTERNS
It can be stated that the integration, connectivity and
intelligibility measures of Dhaka City are found to be high,
medium and low for the indigenous, mixed and planned
settlement types; respectively. The growth and
development of Dhaka can be categorized into six periods,
viz. the pre-Mughal period (1205–1610), the Mughal
period (1620–1757), the East India Company period
(1758–1858), the British colonial period (1858–1947), the
Pakistan period (1947–1971), and the Bangladesh period
(from
1971
onwards)

Whether Venice is an urban pattern 'frozen in time'
because of historical conservation efforts during the
20th century. Venice is 'frozen' into its deformed grid
layout which indicates a well-defined and easily-
understood neighborhood pattern in Venice.
Both cities old Dhaka and Venice are developed by a
surrounding waterbody. For old Dhaka it is Buriganga and
Venice it’s venetian lagoon in Adriatic sea. In Dhaka city
urban pattern has linear roads with organic pattern but
Venice has more mixed and planned urbanization than
Dhaka. In both cities the blocks gets bigger as you move
further from the waterbody.
CITY STRUCTURE
Land Use Pattern

Recreational zone
Post-Mughal transformation
VENICE
The City shall create seven (7) separate and distinct “Neighborhoods”
which facilitate area specific development and redevelopment
strategies
1. The Island
2. Gateway
3. East Venice
4. Pinebrook
5. Laurel Road Corridor
6. Northeast Venice
7. Knights Trail
By comparing both cities land we could see that old dhaka
was mostly planned in order of the business facilities
because having a water body near which was a good
transportation system, afterwards other residential,
recreational etc zones settled there. Whether in Venice there
is far more developed planning where the land use are
divided in order to develop and further redevelopment in
future.
Connectivity and Control
OLD DHAKA
Connectivity (CN) of a space literally means how many spaces
intersect with it. Control Value (CV) is a dynamic local measure. It
measures the degree to which a space controls access to its
immediate neighbors by taking into account the number of
alternative connections that each of these neighbors has
VENICE
In comparing both cities connectivity pattern we can see a
close relationship of angular choice pattern. Also both of the
cities connection is depended on the water body surrounding
it.
