Fire Watch Instructions
A fire watch is a temporary measure to ensure occupant safety when a fire
sprinkler system, fire alarm system, or other life‐safety system is out of service
or impaired. A Fire Watch must be authorized by the Fire Department.
A person representing the business or facility shall sign‐off on a fire watch log
sheet and shall be responsible for assuring that a fire watch will be completed
at least hourly in order for the business to remain open.
One or more persons shall be assigned to fire watch to systematically patrol all
areas of the building and watch for fires or conditions that could result in a
fire.
Fire watches shall be logged for the entire duration of the fire watch and all
logs shall be available to the Fire Department upon request. Logs shall be
retained for at least 72 hours after the termination of the fire watch. A log

The fire watch may be terminated when the condition requiring the fire watch
has been corrected. The Fire Department shall be notified by phone of the
termination of the fire watch at (248)370‐9461 (business line) between 8am
and 5pm or at (248)431‐2366 (shift command) between 5pm and 8am.
A fire watch is only required to be in place during hours that the building is
occupied.
Persons assigned to a fire watch:
o Shall systematically patrol all areas of the building at least every hour for
fires or conditions which may cause a fire.
o Shall correct any conditions that may cause a fire.
o Shall ensure that all exits remain clear of obstructions.
o Shall be equipped with a cellular phone and immediately call 911 if a fire
or other emergency requiring Fire Department response occurs.
o Shall notify building occupants and assist with evacuation of the building
in the event of a fire or other emergency requiring building evacuation.
o Shall know the locations of fire extinguishers and how to operate them.
