Learning Goals
We are learning about Jazz music, its roots and context as an African-
American art form, its prominent musicians, and the larger context in which it
developed.
We are learning about the material that we will need in order to complete our
Jazz Quiz on Ragtime, New Orleans Jazz, Swing Jazz and Bebop Jazz.
Consolidation: Letting students ask questions about the quiz format, questions
about the material, etc... 5min.)
Opening/Minds On
Minds-On
Ask students to do their check-ins and then let them know that they have a quiz
on the assigned date.
Action/Discussion
Clarify to students that there are BOLDED pieces of information that is important
in the slides. They should probably know that for the quiz as well as some facts
that are bolded about the composer.
Review
Read through the review, allow students to read sections of the review so
they can actively participate. Pause after each section to allow students to
ask questions.
Mix and Match: First demonstrate how to do the Mix and Match Game,
then ask a student to demonstrate an example while giving them a hint
(what instrument did they play, what were they known for, etc...), then give
1 minute to complete the rest of the mic and match activity.
Listening Exercise
First explain to students that there will be a listening section of the quiz. Then
explain some key features that they should be on the look out for. You will then
move to the gradual release in responsibility model where you will 1 Do the
question yourself, 2 Give prompts to students in order to answer the
"It doesn't sound like there are too many instruments in this band,
maybe 5 or 6"
"Look at the band, how many people are there? Is it a small or big
band?"
"Does the band sound like its be pre-arranged or are they all
improvising?"
Consolidation
Allow students to ask questions about the quiz, the format, etc...
Students will be able to use this time to review the quiz material
Students will be able to use this time to finish the exit ticket they were unable
to complete from last class.
