Curriculum Expectations
C3. Exploring Forms and Cultural Context: demonstrate an understanding of a
variety of musical genres and styles from the past and present, and their
sociocultural and historical contexts.

Learning Goals
We are learning about Jazz music, its roots and context as an African-
American art form, its prominent musicians, and the larger context in which it
developed.

We are learning about the material that we will need in order to complete our
Jazz Quiz on Ragtime, New Orleans Jazz, Swing Jazz and Bebop Jazz.

Structure and Time
 Minds on: Check-In 5 min.)

 Consolidation: Letting students ask questions about the quiz format, questions
about the material, etc... 5min.)

Opening/Minds On
Minds-On
Ask students to do their check-ins and then let them know that they have a quiz
on the assigned date.

Action/Discussion
Clarify to students that there are BOLDED pieces of information that is important
in the slides. They should probably know that for the quiz as well as some facts
that are bolded about the composer.

Review

Read through the review, allow students to read sections of the review so
they can actively participate. Pause after each section to allow students to
ask questions.

Mix and Match: First demonstrate how to do the Mix and Match Game,
then ask a student to demonstrate an example while giving them a hint
(what instrument did they play, what were they known for, etc...), then give
1 minute to complete the rest of the mic and match activity.

Listening Exercise

First explain to students that there will be a listening section of the quiz. Then
explain some key features that they should be on the look out for. You will then
move to the gradual release in responsibility model where you will 1 Do the
question yourself, 2 Give prompts to students in order to answer the

question, 3 Allow students to collaborate with each other and give some of
their own thoughts 4 Have students answer with an open ended question for
their own final answer to simulate the quiz.

 New Orleans - Think Aloud Examples

"There are a couple of instruments that I hear, it sounds like the


trumpet, saxophone and even the clarinet."

"It doesn't sound like there are too many instruments in this band,
maybe 5 or 6"

"There seems to be some improvisation between multiple instruments,


so collaborative improvisation"

"Louis Armstrong is featured in this song so that would put it probably


in New Orleans Jazz"

"You can definitely dance to this song"

 Swing Jazz - Providing Prompts - allow students to answer in the chat or


out loud.

"Who is singing? What jazz era is she from?"

"Look at the band, how many people are there? Is it a small or big
band?"

"Can you dance to this song?"

"Does the band sound like its be pre-arranged or are they all
improvising?"

 Ragtime - Collaboration Board

Allow students to collaborate together by giving them a chance to give


ONE observation of the style. Indicate later after everyone gives in their
observations you will all choose what type of Jazz era this is an example
of. Possible answers:

"A piano is only playing"

"Scott Joplin is from the Ragtime Era"

"Its in Duple Time"

 Bebop - Practice Quiz

Give students a minute or two to give answers. Then make comments


and give feedback on what they can do better to improve their answer
for the quiz. Make it constructive and precise feedback that can help
them later on.

Consolidation
 Allow students to ask questions about the quiz, the format, etc...

 Students will be able to use this time to review the quiz material

 Students will be able to use this time to finish the exit ticket they were unable
to complete from last class.
