The Limit of a Function

Sketch the graph of the function and use it to determine the values of a for which limx→a f (x) exists.1

1 + sin (x) if x < 0

f (x) = cos (x) if 0 ≤ x ≤ π

sin (x) if x > π

y = 1 + sin (x) 2

1 y = cos (x)

x

b

y = sin (x)

From the graph, the only value for which limx→a f (x) does not exist is x = π.
Thus, limx→a f (x) exists for all a contained in the interval (−∞, π) ∪ (π, ∞).
