5 GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
5.1 MATERIALS
5.1.1 Prepreg
5.1.2.1 The epoxy resin system shall be of high quality suitable for the intended
purpose and non-corrosive to metals. The resin shall be free of all foreign
matter. The resin shall be capable of thoroughly wetting the glass fibers
during impregnation.
5.1.3.1 The woven fabric cloth shall meet all the requirements of MIL-C-9084
except the finish shall be one which is compatible with the epoxy resin in
the prepreg.
5.1.3.2 Before impregnation, the glass cloth shall be free of wrinkles, creases,
tears or permanent distortion.
6 DETAIL REQUIREMENTS
6.1 PREPREG
6.1.1 General
6.1.1.1 The prepreg shall possess a high degree of tack and drape sufficient to
ensure easy handling in routine fabrication procedures in the
temperature range of 65 to 77˚F.
6.1.1.2 The required tack shall allow the prepreg to adhere to itself during hand
lay-up to the extent that stripping a ply will not appreciably disturb the
previous ply. This degree of tack shall be exhibited for a minimum of 10
days at a temperature of +65˚ to +77˚F with a humidity of 55%
maximum.
6.1.1.3 The required drape shall allow the prepreg to be deformed or contoured
over or in a mold and to remain in this position without restraint.
6.1.1.4 The shelf life of the prepreg shall be a minimum of 180 days from date of
receipt at the purchaser’s destination, but not to exceed 210 days from
date of shipment.
6.1.2 Physical
6.1.2.1 The prepreg shall meet all the physical requirements of Table I
6.1.3 Chemical
6.1.3.1 The prepreg resin shall be tested to the requirements shown in Table II
using vendor defined detail test methods approved by Bombardier.
6.1.4.1 The prepreg material shall be uniform in quality and condition, clean
and free from foreign materials, fiber misalignment or other defects
detrimental to fabrication, appearance and performance.
6.1.4.2 Prepreg shall be free from curled or folded selvages that overlays non-
selvage areas, wrinkles, resin rich areas, or other defects detrimental to
handling, lay-up, or structural properties.
6.1.4.3.2 The total maximum amount of nonconforming areas on each roll shall
not exceed 3% of the roll surface.
6.1.4.4 A maximum of 1.5 inches of selvage width on each side of the cloth shall
be permitted.
6.1.4.5 The alignment of the warp and fill yarns shall be perpendicular to each
other. All the warp and fill yarns of the preimpregnated fabric shall be
parallel to their respective direction to within 2 inches over the full
width, not including the selvage.
6.1.4.6 The prepreg width shall be within ± 1 inch of that specified on the
purchase order, not including the selvage.
6.2.1 General
6.2.2 Physical
6.2.2.1 Cured laminates shall meet all the requirements of Table III.
6.2.3 Mechanical
6.2.3.1 Cured laminates shall meet all the mechanical properties listed in Table
IV.
6.2.4 Flammability
6.2.5.1 Cured laminate of any thickness shall have a smoke rating of not greater
than 50.
7 QUALIFICATION
7.1 The manufacturer is responsible for the performance of all tests in this
Specification.
7.2 Product qualification will be based on the testing of prepreg from five
separate and distinctive batches of material. The five separate batches
shall contain at least 3 different resin batches and 3 different lots of
reinforcement. The different lots of reinforcement may be in the fill
direction only.
7.3 The five batches of material shall be layed up as per Table V and
processed in accordance with Table VI by Bombardier.
7.5.1 Humidity
7.5.2 Chemical
7.5.2.1 Specimens are to be tested at +70 ± 10˚F after being soaked at +70 ± 10˚F
for 1000 hours in the following chemicals:
7.6.2 Test specimens shall be conditioned prior to testing at 70˚F ± 5˚F and 50
± 5% relative humidity until moisture equilibrium is reached, or for 24
hours maximum. Only one specimen at one time shall be removed from
the conditioning environment immediately prior to testing.
NOTE: NBS Technical Note 708 conditioning shall not be used.
7.6.3 Each test shall be conducted with the specimen in the flaming or non-
flaming condition, whichever produces the greater amount of smoke.
7.8 The manufacturer shall submit all test data in report form to
Bombardier Aerospace Materials and Processes Engineering showing
compliance with all the requirements of this Specification.
8.2.1 The manufacturer shall be responsible for carrying out the production
sampling and batch inspection tests.
8.2.2 The tests in Table VIII shall be carried out for each prepreg batch within
each shipment and shall meet the requirements of Table I, II, III and IV.
The minimum number of rolls to be tested for each prepreg batch shall
be as per Table IX.
8.2.3 The manufacturer shall furnish three copies of all test results showing
compliance with this specification. This report shall include the
purchase order number, the material specification number, batch number
and date of manufacture.
8.2.4 Bombardier reserves the right to perform any or all of the tests outlined
in this specification. Any test resulting in a failure will necessitate a
return of that batch of material to the manufacturer.
9.2 The shipping container shall include end supports, so that the roll is
fully suspended from the core ends within the container.
9.3 Each roll core, on the inside visible surface, shall have a permanent label
showing the Material Specification, the batch number, the date of
manufacture, and the roll number, and the manufacturer’s product
identification.
9.4 Each shipping container shall be permanently and legibly marked with a
label showing the following information:
