 Read story with your partner.
 While reading, stop to ANNOTATE by marking/noting questions you have and
connections you make in the margins of the short story. There should be significant
annotations—this is part of your grade.
Draw and label a plot diagram for the story that includes the following:
 Exposition (characters, setting, background)
 Inciting incident
 Rising action
 Climax
 Falling action
 Resolution/denouement
Note: if you finish, you may begin the questions.
 Complete the “The Bet” Tweet Storm
 Answer questions that follow the story
 For discussion questions, use the RACE strategy.
 On your own paper, write a theme statement for the story, and provide justification
from the story for this theme using specific details from the story. You will need to
provide one from the beginning, middle and end. You do not have to quote the
short story, rather you can refer to the specific details. Your job is to show the
progression of the theme.
 Read “How the Brain Gets Addicted to Gambling”
 Answer the attached questions.
