4 Mr Khan, the chemistry teacher, was showing his class an experiment.
In a small dish he heated aluminium powder with iron oxide powder. There were a lot
of sparks and flames. When the dish had cooled down, he let the class see what was
left in it. They could see lumps of iron metal and aluminium oxide powder.
a. Name the compound which was used as a reactant.

5 Your teacher gives you a mixture of iron filings (very small pieces of iron), sand and
sugar. She asks you to separate the mixture into the pure substances. Write a plan

spreads from the tea bag into the water.
a. Name the process that takes place in order for the brown colour to spread.

b. Imagine you repeat this but use a cup of hot water. Describe how your
observations would be different this time and use the particle theory to explain

7 Darma noticed one of his bike tyres was flat. He used a pump to inflate it.
a. Explain why the tyre got bigger as he pumped air into it.
......................................................................................................................... [1]

b. The flat tyre felt soft but the inflated tyre felt hard. Use the particle theory and
ideas about gas pressure to explain why there was this difference.

c. Darma inflated the tyre in the middle of a hot day. Early the next morning, he
wanted to ride his bike but discovered the tyre looked a bit flatter. There was no
