CE- 403 Design of Structures III

Advance-Copy: Mid-Term Examination, Fall 2020-21

Date: 10.10.2020 Maximum Marks: 20

Time: 08:30 - 11:30 hrs. Instructor: A. Goyal

General Instructions:
1. Only on-line submission of single .xlsx file through moodle@iitb.ac.in . Create the required
.xlsx file before the examination day.
2. In case of difficulty with moodle submission, email to manish.mishra@iitb.ac.in or
160040029@iitb.ac.in before deadline.
3. The variables in red-colour may depend on your roll number – get them from master list
being emailed on the examination day. Contact Manish or Tanay if you have difficulty
regarding the data for the problem assigned to you.
4. Problem will have maximum eight columns and maximum 10-story (ground + nine upper
floors). Create .xlsx accordingly.
5. Make necessary assumptions wherever necessary.

Problem Statement
For a hospital building, a nine-story block (Ground + eight upper stories) is to be built. The
floor plan is shown on the next page and plan is identical on all floors. Along the periphery,
230 thick light-weight infill masonry walls have been provided. Floor to floor height is 3300.
The spans are given C/C of beams and all dimensions are in mm. All Columns are fixed at
base. The schedule of beams and columns and other design data is given below:
Columns C1, C2, 400 x 800
Columns C3, C4, C5, C6 400 x 400
Columns C7, C8 800 x 400
Floor to Floor Height 3300
All beams 400 x 800
Slab 200 thick
Floor Finish/Waterproofing load on roof 2 kN/m2
Imposed Load 3 kN/m2
Unit Weight of light-weight wall material 12 kN/m3
The building is located in zone V and founded on rocky soil. Take response reduction factor
equal to 5 while computing equivalent lateral forces due to earthquake ground motions. For the
building, do the following:
1. Calculate the coordinates of center of mass and coordinates of center of rigidity
from the origin. To calculate center of mass, consider the floor finish and imposed load
uniformly distributed on the entire floor area.
2. Calculate the shear force in kN (about both axes) and axial force in kN for all
columns of the SECOND STORY for earthquake ground motion along x-axis.
3. Calculate the shear force in kN (about both axes) and axial force in kN for all
columns of the FOURTH STORY for earthquake ground motion along y-axis.
The clauses of accidental eccentricity must be strictly followed. You may consider same seismic
weight on all floors including roof.
