EXPERIMENT No. 1
PROPERTIES OF ORGANIC COMPOUNDS
Objectives:
To be able to differentiate organic from inorganic compounds in terms of their
sources, composition, chemical and physical properties.

Materials & Equipment:

Watch glass, petri dish, and samples of compounds

Procedure:
A. Photosynthesis is a natural process whereby plants get their foods from their
surroundings. That is, plants use carbon dioxide and water in the atmosphere producing
starch and oxygen. The equation is
CO2 + H2O C6H12O6 + O2
Based on the formula of the compounds in the equation, classify each as to inorganic or
organic compounds.
Compound formula classification
1. Carbon dioxide
2. Water
3. Starch
4. Oxygen molecule

B. Given is a list of compounds that occur naturally. Write the molecular formula and the
source or formations. Then classify whether organic or inorganic compound
Compound molecular formula source/formation classification
1. Table salt
2. Table sugar
3. Vinegar
4. Hydrochloric acid
5. Gasoline
6. water
7. Diesel
8. Iron rust
9. Potassium nitrate
10. Calcium carbonate

C. Differentiate organic from inorganic compounds in terms of their

a. Composition
b. Physical properties: state, boiling point and melting point
c. Chemical properties: flammability and combustibility

EXPERIMENT No. 2
THE HYDROCARBONS

Objectives: To be familiarized with the different classifications of hydrocarbons.

To be able to able to differentiate alkanes, alkenes and alkynes.

Hydrocarbons are compounds that contain hydrogen and carbon atoms only. These are
classified as alkanes, alkenes and alkynes. . Alkane has the general formula of CnH2n + 2, alkene is
of CnH2n, while alkynes is of CnH2n – 2. . Alkane contains a single bond in between carbon atoms,
alkene forms a double bond, while an alkyne forms a triple bond.

A. The following is a list of hydrocarbons. Classify each as to alkane, alkene or alkyne as

to their molecular formula.

Hydrocarbons classification
1. CH4
2. C2H2
3. C10 H18
4. C4H6
5. C7H14

B. What are the 2 sources of hydrocarbons? Enumerate and describe.

C. Search for the intrinsic and extrinsic properties of hydrocarbons ( general properties).

Answer:

D. Search the common/ industrial name of the following hydrocarbons:

1. Methane gas
2. Ethane gas
3. propane
4. butane
5. octane

E. Search for the chemical name of the following hydrocarbons:

1. Acetylene
2. Gasoline
3. Kerosene
4. Diesel
5. coaltar

Experiment #3
Alkyl halides

Objectives:
To be familiarized with the alkyl halides in terms of their molecular formula, formation and
properties.
Get acquainted with chemical nomenclature.

Alkyl halides are hydrocarbons containing one or more of the halogen elements like fluorine,
chlorine, bromine, etc.

A. Refer to your lesson for these experiments, list down at least 10 examples of alkyl
halides: name, molecular formula, condensed structural formula and their uses.
B. State the steps of naming the compounds.
