Molecular Biology
Units

1- To provide insights into the cell differentiation and to

understand that it is a terminal stage where cells
irreversibly lose their proliferative capacity which
represents a form of negative control of growing.
2- to illustrate the ability of stem cells to differentiate, unlike
specialised cells with examples of differentiation-inducing
and -inhibiting factors.
3- To cover basic procedures of cell and tissue culture and ‫ اهداف المقرر‬.2
providing knowledge of tissue culture methods including:
types of cells grown in culture, work area and equipment, Aims of Course
preservation and storage, maintenance of cell lines, safety
consideration, and procedures
4- To illustrate the requirement of aseptic conditions, solid
surface, growth factors and nutrients in complex growth
media.
5- Providing knowledge of Protocols specific to individual
tissue types as microcosms.

withdraw from the cell cycle and acquire specialized Understanding
structural and/or functional features that characterize the
cells, tissues, or organs of the mature organism.
Differentiation includes the processes involved in
commitment of a cell to a specific fate and its subsequent
development to the mature state.
2- Understand the aim of mammalian cell culture is to
provide an environment that mimics, to the greatest extent
possible, the in vivo environment of that specific cell type
by providing an appropriate temperature, pH, oxygen, and
CO2 supply, surface for cell attachment, nutrient and
vitamin supply, protection from toxic agents, and the
hormones and growth factors that control the cell's state of
growth and differentiation.
3- The knowledge about types of cell culture and
proliferation versus differentiation
4- The understanding of the difficulty in maintaining cultures
of mammalian cells due to cells dying after a finite number
of divisions in culture.
5- the understanding of the considerable commercial
importance of cell culture in many biotechnology and
pharmaceutical companies.
1- Ability to discuss recent studies using cultured cells.
2- The students will learn the ability to correlate between
different biological samples and show the importance of
different media in tissue culture
3- Ability to evaluate ideas and concepts.
4- Ability to recognise and acknowledge inconsistencies in an ‫ المهارات الذهنية‬.2
argument. Intellectual Skills
5- Ability to question and challenge viewpoints, ideas and
concepts.
6- Make judgments about the value of evidence, concepts and
ideas.
1- The ability to acquire basic skills to characterize cell
cultures, sterilization technique, preparation of cell culture
medium, quantification of cells in culture.
2- Evaluate experimental procedures in situations that are
unfamiliar, by commenting on the purpose or approach,
the suitability and effectiveness of procedures, the control ‫ المهارات المهنية‬.‫ج‬
of variables, the limitations of equipment, possible sources ‫الخاصة بالمقرر‬
of error and/or suggestions for improvement. Professional and
3- The ability to evaluate and synthesize complex research practical Skills
material.
4- Plan and design experimental procedures to test given
hypotheses or to illustrate particular effects. This could
include identification of variables, controls and
measurements or observations required.
1- Work in a team and communicate orally, written, or by ‫ المهارات العامة‬.‫د‬
visual means.. General and
2- Make predictions and generalisations based on available Transferable Skills
evidence.
3- Demonstrate interpersonal skills and personal
effectiveness of planning, time management; writing up on
time; handling relationships with supervisors.
