4 Study and writing skills


In this lesson, students are learning more about study skill of note-taking
from reading and skill of reading charts and writing about them.
In the first half of the lesson, students discuss the importance of note-
taking. They then hear a discussion between students about note-taking
and listen to specific information. Students follow this up by reading an
article on problems for women in science.
In the second half, students start by studying a chart for general
information and then specific information. Students learn and practice
some of the language needed for analysing charts or graphs.
Objectives:
-discuss when and why note-taking happens
-listened for specific information
-study different types of note-taking and personally evaluated them
-study charts
-learn and practice the language of increases and falls
Materials: “New Language Leader. Pre-Intermediate” Course book.
Procedure
I. Beginning of the lesson.
1. Greeting.
2. Warming-up
3. Study skills. Making notes. Discuss questions. (Ex1 p60)
4. Listening
(Listen to talk, then answer questions: What is the main points of the
talk? Choose from the list (1-6). Then compare the two styles of
notes in Exercise 3.
5. Writing skills. Describing charts.
Discuss questions in groups. Which university subjects are popular
in your country with a women and b)men?
Do you think the majority of science students in your country?
6. Analysing data. Look at the chart above. (Ex 8a. p61)
Work with (Ex 8b,8c,9a)
II. The end of the lesson.
7. Home assignment.
(Ex 9c,p61 , write about chart B, describe a)what is about b and
b)some of the most important information.
