I. OVERVIEW

This module will walk you through Rizal’s life and contextualize the 19th century setting. Jose Rizal lived
in the 19th century, a period in Philippine history when a lot of changes happened in and out of the country.
Among the significant changes include the start of consciousness on slavery and desire to abolish it,
modernization of societies and progressive ideas being realized through discussions and activities in the
universities. Rizal is the most revered hero in the Philippines (Alzona, 1977). In schools, teachers encourage
students to emulate his values, intellectual discipline and devotion to country. Since Rizal’s life and novels
were discussed in the basic education, you will just do a quick review to recall what you have studied and
please be guided by the following course outcomes and learning objectives below.

Interview

You have learned the importance of putting the right context to understand ideas or
information clearly. Interview someone of Chinese descent (can be a relative, classmate, neighbor or an
acquaintance) and ask his/her family background like how the family lived during the 19th century (or in
the 20th century) and how they settled in Bacolod or in Negros. After the interview, collate all the info and
complete the KWL chart below. In the first column, write what you already know about the topic. In the
second column, write what you want to know about the topic and in the Third column, write what you
learned from the topic.

To fully appreciate the details of Rizal’s life one should locate him within the wider context of the
Philippines in the 19th century (Obias, 2018). You need to explore the changes in the landscape of the
world as well the Philippines, particularly in politics, commerce and industry. Read the materials below
