Tidal energy – the earth uses the gravitationsal forces between the moon and sun to move vast

amount
of water from the oceans and seas producing tides.

Tides – are perfectly predictable and regular unlike solar and wind energy, allowing most coastline to be
used for tide energy generation. The greater the movement of tidal water the greater the power
generation.

Tidal Energy Generation

The generation of electricity is like hydro-electric generation. The only difference is that the
water flows in and out of the turbines in both directions instead of in just one direction.

Types of tidal energy generation

Tidal barrage generation system

It involves the construction of a fairly low dam wall called a “barrage”. It generates electricity by
using the vertical height difference of the incoming high tide and outgoing low tide.

Parts

Barrage – small wall to to trap water behind it.

Turbines – convert kinetic energy from the tides into electrical energy.

Sluice gates – allows the flow of water through the barrage

Embankments – made out of concrete to prevent water from flowing at certain parts of the dam.

Adv.

Tidal power is a sustainable energy resource.

It reduces fossil fuels dependence.

It has very less visual impact
