There is no such thing as a “freebie” when it comes to absences or being late. If you
Absences & have missed an in class assignment without an official excuse, you will receive a
Late Policy zero. Please note that most assignments are uploaded online, but all are due by the
posted date and time. All times are in the current time zone of Valdosta State (i.e.
Central). Late work is not accepted. If you have an excused absence, you may make arrangements to
turn in your work early. In the case of an emergency, late work may be accepted with documentation of
the extenuating circumstance. Religious holiday conflicts with class should be submitted by the
third week of class. Excused absences are as follows: University Sponsored Events with at least 1 week
prior notice and documentation; Medical/Emotional/ Family Emergencies with appropriate
documentation and communication. All emergency absence documentation is due within two weeks
of your return to class. Make up assignments will not be given until documentation is received.
1. Class will be fun. Students will look forward to the class and the assignments.
Teacher - Student 2. Everything will be useful and have a purpose. I promise not to assign any busy work.
Agreement 3. Participation is required. You do not have to talk the most, but I expect active
listeners and participation.
4. Mature and respectful behavior is expected.
5. Electronics are allowed for CLASS SPECIFIC PURPOSES ONLY.
6. I am here to help, but I expect you to check the syllabus and Moodle before asking
assignments/grade questions.

Assignment Descriptions
• Weekly Discussion Posts: Communication is essentially the sharing of
information. In mass communication, it is critical to stay up to date on the flow
of information, by reading and debating. To help force ourselves to stay up to
date on the course material, the class will have a weekly discussion of which
students must partake. Students will answer each weekly prompt in a blog-
style post with a minimum of 500 words. Further, because feedback is just as important, every
student will read the discussion posts on make a comment on each other student’s initial discussion
post. While there will be no word limit for replies, to earn points the content must be deemed to
have significant substance to warrant points. This will account for just over 48% of your grade.
• Introductions: As an online class, we will never get to meet in person. Since having a repour is
necessary to facilitate healthy discussion on our weekly assignments, we will get to know our fellow
classmates. Each student will record a self-introductory video and upload it to YouTube. The
introduction assignment will be worth 30 points, or 6% of your grade in the course. In the video, you
will answer the following questions:
• Your Name
• Your Hometown
• What you’re interested in learning about in this class
• What you think you’ll learn about in this class

• Semester Paper Presentation: Much like your personal introductions as the beginning of the semester,
you will record yourself presenting your term paper. You will record your presentation on any platform you
like, upload it to YouTube and then provide a URL to your presentation in BlazeVIEW. The paper
presentation assignment will be worth 30 points, or 6% of your grade in the course.
• Extra Credit: To receive extra credit a student must significantly impress the instructor as a courtesy for
the additional grading to his or her workload. As one learns in public relations (my personal field), good
relationships are based on credibility and authenticity, and one of the strongest ways to achieve this is
through community engagement and community service. If you want to earn extra credit this semester,
you must participate in community service, ideally a minimum of 10 hours that can spread out over the
course of the semester.
• Soup Kitchen
This is just a proposed list, you can volunteer in any formal setting that you like as long as I clear it before the
service takes place. For more ideas, you can visit the VSU Volunteer Services & Opportunities or their
Volunteer Opportunities page. If you are not located in the Valdosta area, you are of course more than
welcome to find opportunities in your area.

Academic Resources
• The Academic Support Center: The Academic Support Center (ASC) provides free peer
tutoring in core curriculum courses, including, math, writing, sciences, social sciences, humanities,
and foreign languages. The ASC also provides supplemental instruction (tutor-led study group
sessions) for historically difficult courses like biology, chemistry, geosciences, psychology and
sociology, as well as academic success workshops. New for fall 2018: 24/7 access to online
tutoring through ThinkingStorm, which includes Writing Center where you can submit drafts for
feedback and get help with core courses when the ASC is closed. Call 229-333-7570 to make an

• Odum Library provides a variety of services to assist classroom instruction, including library instruction, course
reserves, and interlibrary loan. Please see Library Faculty Services for further information.
• Student Success Portal: The Student Success Portal provides an interactive dashboard, student profiles and
messaging tools for faculty, advisors and student support staff to easily assess student performance and risk indicators
that may contribute to or hinder students from being successful in their programs. It combines early alert flagging with
predictive analytics to track and improve student performance.
