COMMUNICATION MODEL

The communication model for the given example of miscommunication,

keeping in view the causative noise factors is as follows:

SENDER ENCODING CHANNEL DECODING RECEIVER

CROWD “LOW WATER” ORAL “HELLO WALTER” WALTER
CRONKITE

TYPES OF BARRIERS
Mixed Voices: The collective yelling and hollering of the small crowd might have contributed to
the important message not being delivered aptly. Having only one individual convey the message
in a loud and clear tone might have solved the problem.

Distance: The considerable distance between the boat captain and the crowd could have been a
crucial factor in causing miscommunication. The loudness of the sound created by the crowd
might have fainted enough over the distance for the boat captain to misinterpret the sound.

Noise On The Boat: It is quite possible that there might be some source of noise on the boat itself
that might have created distraction or disruption for the captain in interpreting the message.
Noise sources might include engine revving, clatter of mechanical components and sound
produced by the waves in the sea caused by motion of the boat.

Self-centeredness: The boat captain might have been too involved with the thought of being
welcomed by the crowd. So much so that he became oblivious of his physical surroundings and
did not ponder over potential mishaps.
