Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar recalled an instance from his debut series against West Indies in 1971, when
the great Rohan Kanhai said a few words to the batsman. Gavaskar was approaching a century when he played a
reckless shot, and that is when Kanhai walked up to him. However, instead of sledging or swearing at Gavaskar,
Kanhai had something totally contrary to say, something which the former India batsman nds ‘unbelievable’ till
date.

“In my debut series, if I played a bad shot when crossing over me to go to the slips for the next over, if he was not
within earshot of the wicketkeeper, he would whisper in my ear: ‘Concentrate! Don’t you want a 100? What’s the
matter with you? He’s in the opposition, he’s not swearing at me, he actually wants me to get a 100. Unbelievable!”
Gavaskar told Gaurav Kapur on his show 22 yarns.

Gavaskar famously went on to slam three centuries and a double in his rst ever series for India. However, besides

the fame and recognition he gained, Gavaskar earned his friendship with Kanhai as the two went on to become

great pals. Inspired by the West Indies batsman, Gavaskar even named his son Rohan.

“Apart from his batsmanship, (why I respected Rohan Kanhai so much was because of) how he secretly encouraged
me. There’s always been this issue between African-origin people and Indian-origin people in Trinidad, Guyana.

Off the eld, he (Kanhai) was one of the nicest guys I ever met. Naming my son after him was a no-brainer,”
Gavaskar added.

If cricket fans are asked to name the top three Indian fast bowlers of all-time, the chances of Zaheer Khan’s name
featuring in majority of the lists is as high as anybody else’s. Zaheer was arguably the best left-arm seamer to have

represented India and also one of the main architects of India’s World Cup triumph in 2011 along with former all-
rounder Yuvraj Singh. When former India batsman VVS Laxman stated last week that he would be paying tributes

to some of the great Indian cricketers he has played with, there was no doubt that Zaheer’s name would feature in
it. On Monday after Zaheer had lauded the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Anil Kumble, Rahul Dravid, Sourav Ganguly,
Javagal Srinath, Harbhajan Singh, Virender Sehwag, and Yuvraj Singh, it nally did.

Laxman said Zaheer, who made his India debut in the ICC Knockout in 2000 in Kenya, said the former Indian
pacer’s journey from “tiny” Shrirampur to the “dizzy heights of success” illustrated the strength of his character.

“Daring to dream big and determined to chase those dreams, Zaheer Khan’s journey from tiny Shrirampur to the
dizzy heights of success illustrated the strength of his character. His career-de ning county stint at Worcester
reiterated his desire to reinvent himself and shed comfort zones,” Laxman said in a tweet.

One of the nest exponents of reverse swing, Zaheer represented India in three ODI World Cups in 2003, 2007 and
2011. He was India’s leading wicket-taker with 21 scalps to his name in the 2011 World Cup.

Zaheer also had a county stint with Worcestershire and the county season helped the pacer to further enhance his
skills and make a comeback to the Indian side after being dropped in 2004. He picked up 10 wickets on debut for the
county, becoming the rst player in over a hundred years to achieve the feat.

The pacer played 92 Tests, 200 ODIs and 17 T20Is for India, managing to pick up 601 wickets across all the three
formats.

Zaheer decided to retire from international cricket in 2016.

England fast bowler Jofra Archer has urged victims of racial abuse to speak out following the death of an unarmed
black man in police custody in the United States.

Video footage showed a white police of cer kneeling on the neck of George Floyd, 46, for nearly nine minutes
before he died on May 25, triggering outrage and protests across the world.

“I’m very glad the Black Lives Matter campaign has got as vocal as this,” Archer, who was racially abused by a fan
during a test against New Zealand in November last year, wrote in his column for the Daily Mail.

“As an individual, I’ve always been one for speaking out, especially if something bothers you. My personal view is
that you should never keep things bottled up, because racism is not okay.”

Archer has played seven tests and 14 one-day internationals for England and has lauded the team for its diversity.

“We all live in the country and if you are English, you have as much right to play as anyone else,” the 25-year-old
added.

“There was a picture ... of me, Jos Buttler and Adil Rashid hugging in celebration during the 2019 World Cup. It told
you everything you need to know about our team.”

India captain Virat Kohli has been compared with the legendary Sachin Tendulkar for a long time now. His
consistency in all formats and run-scoring abilities has made Kohli one of the front-runners to challenge Sachin’s

towering numbers in international cricket. Kohli’s mastery in chasing totals and nonchalantly hit fast bowlers in
limited-overs cricket has made some greats like Ian Chappell compare him with Viv Richards too. Among current

cricketers, Kohli has always drawn comparisons with Australia’s Steve Smith. But on Sunday, former Pakistan
captain Aamer Sohail added a new chapter in Kohli’s career by comparing him with legendary Pakistan batsman
Javed Miandad.

Sohail, who was Pakistan’s one of the most successful openers, said much like Miandad, Kohli’s greatness rubs off
on his teammates.

“The most important point for me is that big players break out. They are individually great, but their greatness does
not help the team at all. When you talk about Pakistan’s cricket history and its greatness, the rst name that comes
to mind is Javed Miandad.

“His greatness is still talked about to this day because he used to raise the level of play of the rest of the team.
When you stitch a long partnership with him, you used to learn so much, and get inspired that you want to improve
more. This is what Kohli has done as well. If you look around Kohli, every player has improved alongside him and
this is why Kohli gets the tag of a great player,” Sohail said on his YouTube channel.

Miandad, who played 124 Tests and 233 ODIs in an international career spanning close to two decades, was among
the nest batsmen to have represented Pakistan. He scored 8832 runs an average of 52.57 in Test cricket and in
ODIs he had 7381 runs at an average of 41.70.

Sohail also went on to explain the reason behind Kohli’s greatness.

“Let me explain why Virat Kohli has become a great player? When he burst onto the scene, he was amboyant,
aggressive, and liked to team up with life. Very quickly, he realised that I need to separate my professional life with
my personal life. That really bene ted him.”

“The guidance he received after that you need to do away with certain things to become a consistent player for
India - and he did so. He improved his defensive technique. When he got a chance to play for India in 2008, and
then when he made a move to T20I in 2010, and then he made his debut in 2011 - during this time he found his
game. He realised what were his strengths, and how he needs to take them forward. He also realised what was his
weakness, and how can he improve upon it, or camou age it. He kept improving his game, and he dominated in
world cricket.”

Sohail said Kohli’s passion and determination have made him one of the best cricketers in the modern era and
added that it arises from Kohli’s respect for the game, his fans, and his country. “But here are four major reasons I
believe why he became a great player. The rst point is passion and determination. An average player, when they
represent their country, they are happy with the performances as long as they can stay in the team. They are just
satis ed with that.

“But great players do not let their passion and determination deteriorate. This cannot be taught, this comes from
within when you respect the game, your fans, and the colours that you wear and the country you represent,” he
said.

Sohail stressed on Kohli’s desire to always become a better player is the second reason why he is a great cricketer.

“The second point is to desire to become a better player and be coachable - this is what has been seen in Kohli. In
the beginning, he used to

Michael Holding(Twitter)

West Indies cricket great Michael Holding believes regulations against racism in sports will remain “just a plaster
on the sore” as long as the society does not unite to tackle the menace.

Asked about his views on the worldwide campaign against racism after the killing of African-American George
Floyd in the US and numerous athletes taking a stand against it, Holding said racism in sports cannot be stopped by

merely having tough rules.

“You will get racism, people will shout things at cricket grounds, football grounds, wherever, you can’t stamp out
racism by tackling individual sports, you have to tackle the society,” Holding, who took 249 wickets in 60 Tests for
West Indies between 1975 and 1987, said in an Instagram chat on Sunday night.

“It is the people from the society who go to these grounds and shout racist slogans or racist abuse at people. You
have to tackle it from the society itself, not the sport,” the 66-year-old added.

Holding said the realisation has to be within the society that it is unacceptable to discriminate. “Fine, sports can
have their rules and regulations under which you enter the ground, that’s just a plaster on the sore,” he said.

“The people in the society have got to understand that it is unacceptable, and when you tackle it in the society
itself, it will not spill over in sport,” he added.

Holding’s compatriots Darren Sammy and Chris Gayle have spoken strongly against racism and supported the
‘Black Lives Matter’ campaign around the world.

Sammy, a two-time T20 World Cup-winning captain, has gone on to allege that he was subjected to racist
comments during his stint with Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League.
